With the end of the breeding period for the pearl mullet, a fish unique to and living only in the Van Gölü basin, the natural cycle of return has begun. Millions of fry of this endemic species, found nowhere else in the world, have started swimming towards the main waters of Van Gölü from fresh waters to survive after hatching. In this critical period, comprehensive coordination has been ensured under the Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry and all necessary measures have been taken for the fish to reach the lake safely.

To ensure the smooth completion of this migration journey, which is of great importance for the continuation of the pearl mullet generation, authorities continue their inspections uninterruptedly on a 24/7 basis. The migration of these fish, which constitute the livelihood of approximately 15 thousand people in Van province, ends on July 15 for breeding purposes. During this process, gendarmerie, police, municipal police, and coast guard teams are actively serving in the field to facilitate the return of the fry to the lake and to prevent illegal fishing.

Muhammet Demir, the Branch Manager of Fisheries and Aquatic Products at the Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, shared detailed information about the studies, stating that they started preparation work one month before the start of the fishing ban. Demir stated that decisions to be implemented in the field were made following meetings with commission members, and awareness training was conducted for personnel and students in schools. The primary purpose of these trainings and inspections is emphasized as leaving a healthier fish population to future generations.

Concrete data have been obtained in the inspections carried out this year regarding the fight against illegal fishing; in the checks carried out since April 15, an administrative fine of 2 million 818 thousand TL has been imposed on 147 persons. In addition, 19 tons of dead pearl mullet were seized during inspections, while 7 fiber boats and 70 different fishing tools were seized by security forces. These data reveal the determined stance against illegal fishing and the seriousness of sanctions for those who do not comply with the rules.

The positive effects of the protection efforts and inspections have been confirmed by observations in the field. During inspections, especially at night, millions of pearl mullet fry were seen swimming off the coast of Van Gölü, which pleased the authorities. In addition to the increase in fish population compared to the past, a significant improvement has been recorded in the size of pearl mullets; while the average fish size was 17-18 cm 15-20 years ago, it has been determined that it has reached 22-23 cm in today's measurements. This development proves that the bans and inspections have increased fish abundance and ensured the species becomes healthier individuals.
