20,000 homes to be rebuilt after floods and landslides in Nepal

At least 1.204 people lost their lives and 4.200 people went missing in the landslide and flood disaster that occurred in Nepal last week. The disaster, which began with the collapse of glaciers on the Chinese border, leveled villages and completely destroyed 7.500 homes. In total, approximately 20.000 housing units became uninhabitable and will be rebuilt.

Rescue teams are searching for workers trapped in the tunnels of hydroelectric power plants with the help of experts from India, South Korea, and China. Nine South Korean workers are missing at the Upper Trishuli-1 plant, where a South Korean team is searching with drones and dogs. Authorities stated that they will not allow resettlement in the same dangerous areas and planned reconstruction in safe locations.

According to UNICEF, at least 22.000 children are in need of clean water and hygiene a week after the disaster. Temporary schools are opening, but families who lost identity documents are struggling to access aid. The government stated it is focused on reconstruction and recovery efforts.
