Aristoteles University (Aristotelio Panepistimio Thessalonikis - APTH), located in Yunanistan's second largest city, Selanik, has taken a major step in educational technologies by initiating the process of digitizing the traditional exam system. 2 bin 730 tablet computers and specially developed software, purchased with funds provided by the Ministry of Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence, have now started to be used in exams. The main purpose of this digital exam infrastructure is to make exam processes faster, more reliable, and more efficient for both students and academic staff. The system aims to make a significant contribution to a sustainable environmental policy by preventing paper waste. This innovative step stands out as a concrete reflection of the country's digital transformation vision in higher education institutions.
The aforementioned electronic exam system has successfully passed a highly comprehensive testing process so far. In a large-scale usage network covering 27 different academic departments and 365 undergraduate courses, more than 8 thousand students have taken exams using this digital infrastructure. The university administration draws attention to the magnitude of the system's importance, stating that approximately 5 thousand different course exams are held each year and more than 50 thousand students are affected by these exams. The tablets used easily support exam questions in different formats, such as multiple-choice questions, text writing, mathematical operations, and drawing various schemas. Thanks to this flexible structure, the system can be easily used by all faculties and various scientific disciplines of the university, from medicine to engineering.
The feasibility and cost dimension of the project are also an indicator of the Yunanistan state's support for education and technology. This investment, with a total budget announced as 1,2 million Euro excluding VAT, was financed within the scope of the Public Investment Program of the Ministry of Digital Governance. Following the successful integration of the system, a visible improvement has been recorded in the academic and administrative operations of the university. The new system has significantly shortened the time academics spend on the grading process, allowing results to be announced much faster. In addition, this digital infrastructure, which lightens the heavy administrative burden on instructors, reduces the consumption of paper and consumables to almost zero.
It was stated that comprehensive and strict measures have been taken against security and cheating risks, which are the most critical points of digital exams. All tablet devices used in the exams are connected to a specially configured, highly secure local wireless network that is completely isolated from the outside world. Access to the platform is restricted only to authorized students taking the exam at that moment, and internet searching or any communication with the outside is technically blocked. Thanks to this closed-circuit system, the reliability and transparency of the exams are guaranteed at the highest level. Thus, both the unfair treatment of students has been prevented, and academic integrity has been maintained in the digital environment.
High-level officials also attended the visit to the Faculty of Medicine to inspect this important technological development on-site. Minister of Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence Dimitris Papastergiu, Deputy Minister of National Education Nikolaos Papaiannu, and APTH Rector Kiriakos Anastasiadis personally observed the implementation of digital exams. Emphasizing that technology only carries meaningful value when it solves real problems and improves people's daily lives, Minister Papastergiu stated that this new system will greatly facilitate both students and education staff. Rector Anastasiadis stated that this successful implementation is a very important part of the close cooperation with the relevant ministries and strategies to overall improve the student experience. Officials added that they believe other universities in Yunanistan can also carry their education systems into the future by taking inspiration from similar digital transformation models.
