In Şam, the capital of Syria, the trial of Vesim Esad, one of the prominent figures of the former regime, continues. The transitional justice process, initiated by the Syrian judiciary on 26 Nisan, was launched to try suspects accused of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity during the years-long civil war.

The second hearing of the case, held at the Dördüncü Ağır Ceza Mahkemesi, was presided over by Judge Fahreddin Mustafa El-Aryan. In the closed session, which was also attended by representatives of national and international human rights organizations, the testimonies of witnesses in the public case were heard. The court, ensuring the rights of the defense, adjourned the process to the next hearing on 22 Temmuz.

According to the indictment read at Vesim Esad's first hearing on 24 Haziran, the suspect is accused of establishing and managing armed groups under the orders of Brigadier General Gayyat Dala, one of the commanders of the Dördüncü Tugay, since the beginning of 2011. Furthermore, he is alleged to have participated in military operations targeting civilian areas, particularly the town of Mellibe in the Doğu Guta region, which resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians.
