Nepal Agriculture Minister: Climate Change Must Be Overcome and Self-Sufficiency in Rice Must Be Achieved

The Nepal Agriculture Minister emphasized the great importance of achieving self-sufficiency in rice production despite the negative impacts of climate change on the agricultural sector. Issuing a celebration message on the occasion of the 23. National Rice Day and Rice Planting Festival, Minister Chaudhary stated that it is imperative for countries to reduce their external dependence in terms of food security. In this context, he underlined that urgent steps must be taken to increase agricultural production and expand sustainable agricultural practices. He pointed out that the threats posed by climate change affect not only local farmers but the entire economy of the country. Therefore, he stated that it is inevitable for traditional farming methods to be supported by modern and resilient techniques.

Minister Chaudhary stated that the main slogan of this year's festival directly reflects current challenges and the needs of the sector. The slogan has been determined as "Climate-Friendly Technology, Self-Sufficiency in Rice, and Prosperity," focusing on both environmental sustainability and economic growth. It was announced that this vision aims to offer innovative solutions to problems faced by farmers, such as drought, floods, and extreme weather events. It was noted that this technological approach aims to increase productivity while simultaneously minimizing environmental damage. Thus, it will be possible to achieve both the conservation of natural resources and long-term agricultural development at the same time.

It is known that rice holds strategic importance for countries with agriculture-based economies like Nepal. Increasing the local production of this crop, which is the staple food source of the population, can help keep food inflation under control. The Agriculture Minister added that substituting imported rice with domestic production would alleviate the pressure on foreign exchange reserves. Furthermore, it was emphasized that this self-sufficiency goal is seen as a critical tool for raising the income levels of local farmers and reducing poverty in rural areas. Assurance was given that the country's agricultural policies would be reshaped accordingly and more government support would be provided to farmers.

Officials stated that the use of environmentally friendly agricultural pesticides and fertilizers that prevent nature from being destroyed will also be promoted.
