Following the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes that occurred in Venezuela on 24 June, the death toll rose to 5 thousand 278 and the number of injured to 16 thousand 740. National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez announced in a statement on his social media account that there was an increase of 70 in the number of those who lost their lives in the disaster.
Since the date the incident occurred, a total of 1405 aftershocks have been recorded in the region. According to the statement by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the cost of the physical damage caused by the earthquakes was calculated as 6.7 billion dollars.
The government started works to solve the housing shortage for the earthquake victims. At a ceremony held in the capital Caracas, led by Acting President Delcy Rodriguez, the first houses were delivered to more than 240 families affected by the disaster. Jorge Rodriguez stated that they aim to complete 4 thousand houses by the end of the year and plan for this number to exceed 10 thousand in 2027.
