Death Toll in Venezuela Earthquake Reaches 3,342: The Toll of Destruction Worsens

The deadly toll of the devastating earthquakes that struck Venezuela on 24 Haziran continues to worsen with each passing day. According to the latest official statement made by the country's Ministry of Communication and Information, the number of those who lost their lives in the disaster has risen to 3,342. According to the same official data, the number of people injured in varying degrees due to the earthquakes has also reached a remarkably high figure of 16,740. Authorities state that search and rescue operations are continuing at full speed and intensive efforts are being made to find missing persons. This tragic picture reveals the magnitude of the tremors in the region and the destruction they caused.

The detailed data shared by the Ministry reveals that the disaster was not limited to loss of life, but also caused massive destruction in the country's infrastructure. The tremors directly affected a total of 856 buildings, and a large portion of these structures suffered damage to the extent that they became unusable. Among these, the number of completely destroyed and leveled buildings has been recorded as 190. These massive structural collapses have caused thousands of people to suddenly become homeless and stranded. In this context, it has been reported that 17,345 people in the earthquake-affected areas still do not have access to permanent shelter and are in urgent need of accommodation.

Search and rescue operations initiated in the region following the disaster are being conducted with large-scale and international cooperation. According to the latest information obtained from authorities, 6,462 people have managed to hold on to life and been rescued so far in order to save those trapped under the rubble or in difficult situations. To support this massive operation, 4,088 international rescue personnel have been dispatched to the earthquake zones. In addition to international teams, 29,567 local personnel and 27,482 volunteers are actively contributing to humanitarian aid and search efforts on the ground. This intensive manpower in the field is working day and night to find survivors and provide emergency support to the local population.

Large-scale aid operations are also being organized to alleviate the dimensions of the humanitarian crisis and meet the basic needs of the victims. So far, various emergency aids such as food, water, shelter materials, and hygiene kits have been delivered to 86,794 families by relevant institutions and organizations. In addition, emergency medical intervention and treatment have been applied to 23,820 earthquake victims due to the intense trauma and physical damage experienced in the region. Authorities state that the distribution of aid materials continues and logistical challenges are being tried to be overcome with external support coming to the region. Health teams and psychologists are also actively on duty in the field to provide both physical and psychological support to the earthquake victims.

Since the moment the earthquake occurred, it is observed that seismic activity in the region has not calmed down and the danger continues. According to statements made by relevant authorities, a total of 995 aftershocks have been recorded following the main earthquakes on 24 Haziran. These intense aftershocks make rescue operations more difficult by causing already damaged and severely wounded buildings to become even more risky. As is known, Venezuela faced a major disaster when it was shaken by these two massive earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, which occurred only 39 seconds apart on 24 Haziran. Considering that in previous statements the death toll was announced as 2,954 and the number of injured as 16,592, it is clearly understood how quickly and terrifyingly the toll has worsened.
