Political Crisis Deepens in Wayanad Disaster: Harsh Criticism from Pinarayi Vijayan Towards the Chief Minister

Political tension is escalating in the region following the Wayanad landslide disaster in India's Kerala state. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan made very harsh statements targeting the opposition leader and relevant ministers during his visit to the disaster zone. Vijayan argued that claims regarding the environmental permits for the tunnel project, where the disaster occurred, being obtained through illegal or predatory methods are completely baseless, suggesting this was a deliberately orchestrated perception operation. In his speech, he recalled the lawsuits and court processes regarding the issue, emphasizing that the High Court and the Appellate Court had approved the granted permits. He added that officials and ministers are trying to blame others to evade responsibility, stating that the incident must be investigated transparently.

One of the main issues addressed in Chief Minister Vijayan's statements is the lack of measures and bureaucratic negligence that increased the scale of the disaster. He stated that as part of the tunnel construction, clear instructions were given by a higher-level committee that the excavated soil should not be left there and must be removed from the area. However, he noted that despite these instructions, this soil, which acted as a bridge, was left as it was until the moment of the disaster, combining with the sliding soil from above to create a massive avalanche. It is argued that the officials' failure to act despite the warnings directly increased the destructiveness of the disaster. The Chief Minister emphasized that how this process was managed and at what stage the instructions were ignored must be clearly investigated.

Following the heavy rains and landslides in the Wayanad region, the plight of the local residents has become one of the most critical issues on the officials' agenda. It has been reported that the basic needs of the citizens who survived the disaster and were placed in temporary shelter camps are not being adequately met. Particularly, the lack of sufficient clothing for women in the shelters and their forced living in the clothes on their backs has been brought up as a humanitarian issue. It has been announced that there is solidarity with the families of the deceased citizens and that search and rescue operations continue uninterruptedly to find missing persons. It was stated that the government has mobilized all its resources to alleviate the hardships in the camps.

The claims that the negligence of meteorological warnings and emergency action plans played a major role in the occurrence of the disaster are also among the allegations put forward. The fact that officials only implemented a Yellow Code (Yellow Alert) despite the onset of heavy rains in the region, without taking a higher-level safety measure, has drawn significant backlash. It has been criticized that declaring a Red Alarm (Red Alert) after the disaster occurred and everything went out of control was merely a display done after the fact. It is noted that the government faces serious accusations for failing to activate necessary early warning systems despite the danger signs and for mobilizing rescue mechanisms late. This situation reveals a significant vulnerability of the officials in comprehending the gravity of the situation.

In addition to all these developments, the negligence and delayed interventions of government officials and related institutions regarding the process have also been heavily criticized by the Chief Minister. The fact that the relevant railway officials took no action despite having a two-week period to remove the accumulated soil in the area has been evaluated as a major case. It was emphasized that the institutions and organizations directly responsible for the failure to remove these soil piles, which triggered the disaster, must be held accountable. Although Chief Minister Vijayan views the initiation of an investigation after the disaster as a positive step, he claimed that certain circles are trying to use this crisis to mislead the public and distort the facts. He added that a campaign is being conducted within the government to distort the truth, stating that all facts must be clearly announced to the public for the incident to be fully illuminated.
