xAI's unauthorized energy projects threaten Black communities

Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI installed 59 natural gas turbines without a federal clean air permit for the Colossus 2 data center in Tennessee. According to a Reuters analysis, the potential emissions created by the turbines are well above the threshold requiring a federal permit. This pollution is being emitted in the areas closest to predominantly Black communities, which already have high rates of lung disease.

It was reported that the company previously stated it was operating only 27 unpermitted turbines and argued that a permit was not required. At least 57 of the turbines were installed in the city of Southaven, Mississippi, just across the border from Memphis, where the data center is located. This situation reveals how the increasing energy demand of artificial intelligence data centers is pushing companies to bypass environmental regulations and build off-grid power plants, creating major public health risks.

Civil rights groups such as the NAACP and the Southern Environmental Law Center have sued xAI on the grounds that the facilities cause air pollution in historically Black-populated areas. Additionally, the US Department of Justice intervened in the case, stating that shutting down the turbines could jeopardize systems supporting US military activities, including Iran operations. The court's decision could determine how environmental laws are enforced in the rapidly growing artificial intelligence sector.
