According to the latest statements made by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the death toll from the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda has surpassed the 600 mark. While a total of 1779 confirmed cases have been detected in the two countries, the overall case fatality rate of the outbreak has been recorded at approximately 34 percent. The recovery of 302 people infected with the virus stands out as a promising development in the fight against the disease. Officials are calling on the international community to provide global solidarity and support due to the increasingly growing scale of the outbreak. These data reveal the seriousness of the public health crisis facing the continent.

The situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is following an extremely critical course, as approximately 353 new confirmed cases were recorded in the country within the past week. This increase represents a significant 25 percent rise in the current number of cases in the said country. Africa CDC Ebola response operations manager Wessam Mankoula stated that the virus is staying one step ahead of response efforts and that the outbreak is still growing and evolving. Mankoula also increased concerns by noting that this is the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak seen on the continent to date. It is estimated that each infected person in the affected region transmits the virus to an average of 1.4 more people.

Experts frequently emphasize the existence of serious logistical, financial, and infrastructural challenges in the fight against the outbreak. As announced, the lack of sufficient funding and inadequate safe burial capacities in the region make managing the crisis extremely difficult. Furthermore, the high infection and death rates among frontline healthcare workers deeply affect both the workers and the system. It has been reported that 112 healthcare workers have contracted the virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo to date, and unfortunately, 35 of them have lost their lives. This grim picture reveals the immense pressure the region's health infrastructure is under.

Despite this major crisis, some positive and commendable steps are being taken within the scope of the fight against the outbreak. Thanks to the progress achieved in laboratory testing capacities, more than 2,000 tests can now be performed daily in the region. Although the lack of an approved vaccine or licensed medical treatment for the Bundibugyo Ebola variant poses a significant handicap, the initiation of clinical trials for treatments targeting this variant is considered a major breakthrough. On the other hand, Uganda's rapid and effective intervention in controlling the outbreak is being praised. The fact that no new cases have been reported in the country since 21 June and the situation has been brought under complete control proves that the fight against Ebola can be won with the right strategies.

This public health crisis is not limited to just the two countries but poses a serious security threat for the entire continent. Immediately after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the situation a public health emergency of international concern, Africa CDC also declared a regional security emergency on 18 May. In addition to the directly affected countries, 11 more countries across the continent have been classified as being at high risk. These countries include South Sudan, Rwanda, Kenya, Zambia, the Central African Republic, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Angola, the Republic of the Congo, Burundi, and Somalia. Officials add that proactive measures must be taken on a global scale to prevent the virus from spreading to wider areas.
