Alicante University Board of Governors Expanded: More Authority for the Rector

The new statute of Alicante University (UA) comes into effect this Friday, bringing radical changes to the institution's management structure. The number of members in the Board of Governors, the highest management body, is being increased from 53 to 70. This structural transformation will directly affect the internal power balances within the university, particularly the rector's office. The main purpose of the reform is to make the institution's functioning fully compliant with the current legal framework. The most striking aspect of the new regulation is that it grants Rector Amparo Navarro more power and decision-making authority within the Board of Governors. The law regarding the Spanish state university system, in force since 2023, requires that the rector has the right to personally select one-third of the members in this collective body. Increasing the representation rate of students in the highest management bodies is a meaningful step taken to ensure the more active participation of young people in decision-making processes regarding education. Furthermore, this regulation allows the voices of different groups on campus to be heard more strongly in the decision-making mechanisms.
