More Than 30 People Detained During Counter-Protests Held During the NATO Summit in Ankara

As part of the 36th NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Ankara, while world leaders were arriving in the city, an anti-NATO group attempted to hold an unauthorized protest. Various protests had been on the agenda before and during the summit, which continues with the participation of leaders. This comprehensive ban decision is considered a measure implemented to ensure the security of international participants and maintain public order. Authorities emphasized that necessary administrative and judicial procedures would be carried out against those who do not comply with the ban and attempt unauthorized protests. To implement the decision, extensive security measures were taken at various points across the city, and teams were put on high alert. Bans imposed during such large-scale events are usually implemented as a standard procedure to prevent potential security threats.

Despite the said ban, anti-NATO groups gathering at different locations attempted to carry out their protests to make their voices heard. Police teams marched towards these groups, who were conducting unauthorized protests and violating the ban, and called on them to disperse. The police intervened against the protesters who refused to disperse and wanted to continue their actions, and many individuals were detained by security forces. Although no official information has been shared yet regarding whether any physical clashes or loss of life occurred during the detentions, there are observations that tension has risen in the area. Riot police teams dispatched to the scene took control of the area to disperse the crowd and re-establish security.

No official statement has been made yet by the authorized institutions regarding the number of detained individuals. However, according to estimates based on information obtained from the field and the statements of eyewitnesses, it is claimed that more than 30 people have been detained. It was reported that the individuals taken to police stations are having their statements taken, and after the necessary procedures are completed, they are expected to be released or referred to the courthouse. Human rights organizations and some opposition politicians criticize this comprehensive protest ban and the consecutive detentions, stating that they restrict freedom of expression. However, government officials argue that such measures are inevitable for the security of an international summit.
