Memory Chip Shortage Lowers Global Smartphone Shipments, Price Increases Expected

Global smartphone shipments decreased by 11 percent in the second quarter due to the memory chip shortage increasing costs. Along with this decline, the market recorded its weakest second-quarter performance since 2013. This sharp contraction in the market will reflect on consumers, potentially leading to new price hikes for phones in the upcoming period.

Despite the contraction in the industry, some manufacturers managed to improve their performance. Apple increased its shipment numbers, achieving a record market share for itself. Samsung, on the other hand, managed to rise back to the global leadership seat during this period.

According to analysts' assessments, the current memory crisis will not be resolved in the short term. The crisis is expected to continue until 2027. This situation may cause smartphone prices to rise even further in the coming months due to the persistent pressure on production costs.
