UN Representative Ibrahim Calls for Global Debt Swap for Education in Paris

Nigeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, called for a bold global debt-swap initiative to enable developing countries to invest in education. This call came during a major conference organized by UNESCO in Paris.

The proposed debt-for-education swap model aims to increase investments in the education systems of debtor countries. Thus, it is aimed to both provide financial relief and strengthen the human capital of these countries to help them achieve their development goals.

The UN representative's proposal has sparked an important debate on the need for the international community to rethink its approach to education financing. The issue of how resources allocated to education can be made more efficient, while developing countries are crushed under increasing debt burdens, continues to be one of the priority issues on the global development agenda.
