Illegal Aesthetic Surgery Network Dismantled in Bogota

In Bogota, the capital of Colombia, authorities successfully dismantled a large-scale criminal network performing illegal aesthetic surgical procedures. A comprehensive operation was conducted jointly by the Attorney General's Technical Investigation Team (CTI), the Health Services Superintendence, the District Health Ministry, and the National Food and Drug Surveillance Institute (Invima). As a result of this operation, numerous clinics and apartments that lacked any legal permits and did not even meet minimum health standards were shut down. Authorities shockingly revealed the magnitude of this setup, which directly endangered public health. The incident highlighted how the high demand for cheap aesthetic surgeries triggers dangerous and illegal practices.

According to officials' statements, a total of four clinics and seven apartments were searched during the operation, and it was discovered that surgical procedures were being illegally performed in these premises. It was determined that surgeries were carried out in these locations without adhering to any protocols and without emergency intervention capabilities, endangering the lives of the patients. During the searches, expired and structurally degraded drugs, as well as biomedical devices without legal registration, were seized. Furthermore, it was revealed that medical devices and materials were stored in extremely unsanitary conditions, contrary to legal requirements. It was emphasized that this situation was one of the greatest dangers uncovered during the operation and could even carry a risk of an outbreak.

Within the scope of the operation, serious sanctions were imposed on significant institutions and businesses. All services of the Obesity and Aging Clinic were completely shut down and sealed due to serious detected violations. All drugs, medical devices, and consumables seized at the Laser Surgery Clinic were quarantined and destroyed on the grounds that they posed a risk. The pharmacy service of the Aesthetic Medicine and Surgery Clinic was seized as a security measure. Similarly, in other suspected businesses, medical materials and surgical instruments were forcibly confiscated as a result of dangerous conditions detected during the inspections. This decisive intervention clearly demonstrated that authorities show zero tolerance to protect public health.

One of the details that surprised and concerned the authorities the most was the illegal aesthetic surgery centers established in residential units. During raids on these private apartments, numerous patients were caught at that very moment undergoing aesthetic surgical procedures or receiving post-operative care. Health teams had to assess the emergency health conditions of these patients using ambulances dispatched to the area. It was understood that patients were left alone with serious infection risks and complications in these unsanitary apartments. Additionally, a fully equipped ambulance parked in a residential area, suspected of being used in illegal surgeries, was seized. Inappropriately disposed biological hazardous waste posed a great danger to the public in the area.

Authorities stated that this extensive investigation conclusively proved the operation of an illegal and irregular aesthetic services network in the capital. It was noted that this illegal network took advantage of the desperation and good faith of citizens seeking low-cost aesthetic interventions but offered them no quality assurance. Participating institutions announced that the recent operation is a harbinger of the next steps and that all illegal medical activities threatening public health will be eradicated. Citizens were urged to strictly verify the legal authorization documents and permits of clinics and doctors before undergoing any aesthetic surgery or medical procedure. Warnings were issued that such informal and underground centers severely endanger individuals' health and can even pose life-threatening risks.
