Former Mayor Arrested in Brazil on Suspicion of Laundering 7.6 Billion Reais in Dirty Money

In the sixth phase of the Brazilian Federal Police's "Operation Meat and Nail", the former Mayor of Belford Roxo in the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area, Márcio Canella, was taken into custody. Canella, who serves as the president of the União Brasil party in Rio and was a pre-candidate for the Senate in this year's elections, was arrested in flagrante delicto, with the justification being an illegal weapon found during a search. The 5.56-caliber rifle found in the politician's vehicle was classified, under Brazilian law, as a military-class weapon strictly for restricted use. This discovery led to his immediate detention on charges of 'irregular possession of a firearm'. According to the Federal Police investigation, Canella is being scrutinized on suspicion of laundering organized crime revenues worth 7.6 billion Brazilian Reais over the past six years. As part of the operation, Federal Police teams executed a total of 19 search and seizure warrants in Niterói, São Gonçalo, Itaboraí, Resende, and downtown Rio de Janeiro.
