New Phase of 'Unha e Carne' Operation in Brezilya Targets Milis-Linked Lawmakers

The Brezilya Yüksek Federal Mahkemesi (STF) and Federal Polisi (PF) are preparing new phases of the operation targeting state deputies in the Rio de Janeiro state. As part of the investigation, center-right deputies suspected of having ties to militia groups and criminal organizations are being scrutinized. According to various sources, this line of investigation could expand to include figures close to Senatör Flávio Bolsonaro's political group. The deepening of the operation has once again brought to the agenda the relationship between violence and organized crime and institutional structures in Brezilya politics. The investigation process is expected to result in new arrests and dramatic political developments in the near future.

The investigation is being conducted under the rapporteurship of Yüksek Mahkeme Bakanı Alexandre de Moraes and within the legal framework known as 'Favelaların ADPF'si (Temel Önleyici İlkelerin İhlali Davası)'. In line with the court order, the Federal Polis has begun to more deeply investigate possible relationships between criminal organizations operating in Rio de Janeiro and public officials. It is stated that the new phases will focus particularly on the activities of the members of the Rio de Janeiro Eyalet Meclisi. Although the names of the suspected deputies have not yet been officially announced, the searches and examinations are thought to cover figures from the center-right wing of the political spectrum. This legal process initially started to regulate police operations in the favelas, but over time it has turned into a comprehensive mechanism examining officials' ties to armed groups.

As part of the 'Unha e Carne' (Tırnak ve Et) operation, the Federal Polis has carried out six different phases so far. The latest phase of the operation was launched on 7 Ocak Salı günü, and this wave primarily targeted Márcio Canella, the former mayor of Belford Roxo and a Senate pre-candidate from the União Brasil party. In the fifth phase carried out a week earlier, arrest warrants were executed for businessman Fernando Trabach Gomes, the owner of a chain of gas stations. The investigation initially aimed to shed light on the allegation of leaking classified information regarding police operations planned against the criminal organization called Comando Vermelho. The analysis of documents and communication records obtained over time allowed the scope of the investigation to expand to cover both state-wide and nationwide networks.

Since the beginning of the investigation, the Federal Polis has placed numerous public officials under scrutiny, who are alleged to have connections with criminal organizations and armed militia groups. These include União Brasil party state deputy Rodrigo Bacellar, who previously served as the president of the Rio de Janeiro Eyalet Meclisi and is currently detained in the Brasília Federal Cezaevinde. As the available evidence has increased, the police have begun to meticulously examine the political and economic ties between militia groups in various regions and individuals in the state administration. In the new phases of the investigation, officials will focus on allegations that deputies protected these organizations, provided them with privileged information, or made political agreements in line with the economic interests of the criminal groups. It seems inevitable that the results of the investigation will have profound and shocking effects on the political balance of the state.
