Internal Rift in India's BJP: Candidate Crisis Deepens for Shillong Region

Serious signs of an internal crisis have emerged within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) organization in India's Meghalaya state, in line with its 'Misyon 2028' targets. The South Shillong constituency, considered the party's strongest stronghold in the Khasi Hills region, has become the center of an influence struggle following the influx of new members. The situation was further exacerbated when Homnath Gautam, an experienced figure with an RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) background, joined the party and openly declared his candidacy for this seat. Senior party leader AL Hek has tried to manage the situation in front of the cameras, but he struggles to fully appease the unrest among the grassroots. These developments reveal the immense obstacles the party faces on its path to achieving its goal of coming to power in the 2028 elections.

Homnath Gautam's entry into the party has created a much deeper ideological and organizational shock within BJP ranks than a simple candidate dispute. According to intra-party sources, Gautam's attempt to leverage his 25 years of experience in the RSS as political capital has caused significant confusion. Because RSS membership is traditionally viewed as a lifelong volunteer activity, the transformation of this identity into a political tool has created discomfort among party ranks. This blurring of ideological boundaries has notably diminished the motivation of organizational members working on the ground, particularly in rural areas. Moreover, this incident is not isolated; it is occurring as part of a series of rapid party defections and the emergence of new prospective candidates.

In the background of this internal unrest, other unusual member admissions within the party have also played a role. The recent joining of former MLA Mohendro Rapsang to the BJP stands out as another development that has deeply shaken the party base. AL Hek had personally invited Rapsang to the party and inaugurated his newly opened office in Mawbah with his own hands. However, shortly after Gautam also joined, the emergence of multiple strong prospective candidates for the South Shillong seat put the party management in a difficult position. While Hek argues that the 'strongest' candidate must be fielded to win the South Shillong constituency, he avoids explicitly supporting the incumbent MLA Sanbor Shullai.

Amidst all this turmoil, senior leader AL Hek is trying to project an image of unity and solidarity within the party through his statements to the press. He argues that allowing everyone to join the party is a natural process and that there should be no opposition to new members in order to achieve the goal of forming the government in 2028. While assuring that the seemingly erupting 'grumblings' within the party will be resolved amicably, he is essentially trying to implement a damage control mechanism inside. Furthermore, Hek had to justify the delay in announcing a candidate for the upcoming Shillong Parliamentary by-election. The leader claimed that the party is currently doing all its 'homework' and conducting a meticulous study to determine the most suitable candidate.

This experience of the BJP in Meghalaya represents a classic organizational dilemma frequently faced by major parties competing with regional parties across India. Even the possibility of losing South Shillong, seen as the only real stronghold in the Khasi Hills region, would mean a major strategic blow to the party. To prevent the infighting from disrupting the 2028 goals, the party's senior management needs to take decisive steps quickly and reunite its base. The uncertain fate of incumbent MLA Sanbor Shullai and the emergence of new strong prospective candidates carry the risk of causing a loss of confidence among the electorate. The critical candidate decisions the party will make in the coming days will shape not only the fate of this region but also the future vision of the BJP in Northeast India.
