Two people were safely evacuated this evening as a result of a major rescue operation launched at Ta' Maria Cave in the Ġnejna region of Malta. The operation, carried out in collaboration between the Civil Protection Department (CPD) and the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM), was mobilized to ensure the safety of the individuals trapped inside the cave. The severity of the incident, due to the difficult terrain conditions in the area and the location of the cave, required the rescue teams to carry out a coordinated operation.
CPD teams who noticed the situation were dispatched to the scene from Fire Stations 3, 5, and 7, and were mobilized to reach the trapped persons. Upon arrival at the scene, three CPD rescue divers entered the water and swam towards the inside of the cave to try to reach the injured or trapped persons. During this operation, two CPD boats (RIB) were also called upon to provide support and provide the necessary logistical support along the coastline. The dedication shown by the rescue team while progressing through the difficult structure of the cave played a key role in the success of the operation.
The very wavy and challenging sea conditions during the rescue efforts made the operation even more complex and necessitated progress in difficult conditions. Due to these adverse conditions, the AFM, working in close coordination with the CPD, intervened by deploying a rescue helicopter to ensure the safe evacuation of both individuals by air. Helicopter support was seen as the fastest and safest solution due to the risky nature of access from the coastline.
The operation, carried out with great meticulousness throughout the process, was completed successfully without any adverse events, and the two trapped persons were rescued alive. The fact that the rescued individuals were in good health and that there were no casualties or serious injuries in the incident was a great source of consolation for the rescue teams. The successful outcome of the operation was evaluated as a result of the professional behavior of the teams and synchronized inter-agency work.
Following the completion of the rescue operation, the Civil Protection Department (CPD) issued an official thank-you message to the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM), the Malta Police Force, and the Mater Dei Hospital Emergency Service for their assistance and cooperation. This appreciation was highlighted as an indicator of the high-level coordination and spirit of joint work shown even under difficult conditions. This inter-agency harmony is expected to pave the way for rapid and effective interventions in similar emergencies.
