Forest fire in Spain's Catalonia region affects a wide area

A forest fire that broke out in the town of La Bisbal d'Empordà in Girona province, part of the autonomous region of Catalonia in northeastern Spain, has put local authorities and emergency teams on high alert. Despite efforts to control the blaze, flames spread over a wide area due to the wind, leading to a decision to confine residents to their homes across 13 different municipalities. Officials estimate the fire has affected approximately 250 hectares, and given the severity of the situation, additional support resources have been dispatched to the region.

President of the Government of Catalonia Salvador Illa officially announced in a statement that fire brigade crews (Bombers) have requested support from the Military Emergencies Unit (UME) of the Spanish Army to overcome the difficulties in combating the fire. It was stated that necessary instructions were given for the military unit to participate in firefighting efforts and the team has set off to reach the area. This development highlights that controlling the fire with local resources was not possible and the situation required a national-level emergency intervention.

The most striking security measure taken due to the fire was the restriction of residents leaving their homes in many settlements, including popular holiday resorts such as Calonge, Sant Antoni, Castell d'Aro, Platja d'Aro, and S'Agaró. Additionally, it was stated that the same confinement measures were valid in the regions of Cruïlles, Monells, Sant Sadurní de l'Heura, Forallac, Llagostera, and Santa Cristina d'Aro, as well as in La Bisbal d'Empordà, considered the epicenter of the fire.

A colony house (summer camp/accommodation center) with approximately 150 children, located in the areas under threat, was not evacuated for security reasons as a precaution; however, residents were warned not to leave the building due to the risk of the fire spreading. The proximity of such facilities to fire areas required authorities to take extra precautions to ensure the safety of children and to keep mobility in the region under control. Fire crews are making intense efforts, especially around residential areas and such sensitive points, to prevent the fire from spreading.

According to meteorological data, the strong winds (Tramontana) blowing in the region further strengthened the fire and made extinguishing efforts difficult, while officials sent emergency warnings to citizens via phone and SMS, asking them to be cautious. It was reported that firefighting efforts continue both from the air and the ground, and control lines are being attempted to be established to prevent flames from spreading to more settlements. Latest developments regarding the incident and predictions on when the fire can be brought under control are being shared with the public regularly by the authorities.
