Kazakhstan's Energy Move: 30 New Oil and Natural Gas Fields Are Being Commissioned

Kazakhstan's Minister of Energy Yerlan Akkenjenov shared the country's new vision in the energy sector through important announcements made at a government meeting. The Minister stated that comprehensive work is being carried out to expand the commercial natural gas resource base and make the sector more dynamic. In this context, it was reported that a detailed plan covering the 2025-2029 period, aiming to develop the natural gas sector, has been prepared. Additionally, it was noted that long-term strategies for the commissioning of new and prospective hydrocarbon fields by the year 2035 have been officially approved. Within the framework of the mentioned plan, it is envisaged that a total of 30 new fields will be included in the energy production roster.
Minister Akkenjenov emphasized that the power of national companies is also being utilized in the process of realizing these massive projects. It was stated that so far, a total of 9 important contracts have been signed with the national natural gas company QazaqGaz, and steps are being taken rapidly. It was noted that 6 of these signed contracts are currently in the active exploration (research) phase. It was reported that the remaining 3 projects have directly entered the production phase and have started contributing to the energy flow. Authorities state that this momentum is of great importance for the country's energy supply security.
Kazakhstan's energy investments in recent years have started to bear fruit, and the country has achieved a significant milestone by opening new fields to commercial production. In the period between 2023 and 2025, four major fields were brought into operation through the joint efforts of the national companies QazaqGaz and KazMunayGas. The Anabay, Barhannaya, Rojkovskoye, and Batı Prorva fields were brought to commercial production capacity in accordance with the planned schedule. The commissioning of these fields allows the country to both meet the gas demand in the domestic market and increase its foreign trade volume. Energy authorities state that these developments further solidify Kazakhstan's position as a regional power.
The country's goals of increasing its energy production capacity are not limited to existing projects; much more comprehensive steps are planned for the future. Minister Akkenjenov announced that the year 2027 will be a new milestone for Kazakhstan and that many mega projects will be completed in the same period. In this context, it is aimed to complete the construction and commission the second production facility of the Batı Prorva field. Furthermore, new fields of strategic importance such as Maldıbay, Pridorojnoye, and Urihtau are expected to become operational in 2027. Thanks to these steps, the country's both oil and natural gas production capacity is expected to experience a significant leap.
Kazakhstan's ambitious expansion plans in the energy sector are also being closely monitored in global energy markets. With these investments, the country aims to rise to the position of a critical country not only as a producer but also in terms of energy logistics and trade. The increase in natural gas and oil fields will directly reflect on the country's economy and contribute to regional development by creating new employment areas. Experts foresee that the 2035 vision could turn Kazakhstan into the undisputed energy hub of Central Asia. All these strategic steps clearly show that Kazakhstan's weight in global energy supply security will gradually increase.
