Ecuador army on alert after clash near Colombian border

Ecuador's northern border province of Carchi faced high security measures following an armed clash that took place just a few kilometers away in Colombian territory. The sound of gunfire near the El Carmelo neighborhood and border zones prompted the Ecuadorian Armed Forces to take immediate action and increase control in the area. The intense clash, which lasted about twenty minutes, occurred between illegal groups near the border, causing great concern and anxiety among civilians living in the region. Immediately after the clash, Ecuadorian military authorities secured the area at full capacity against any risk of negligence or border violation.

Explosions and gunfire during the clash were clearly heard from the El Salado area, located just three kilometers from the border. Initial assessments reported by local media sources indicated that there were casualties and deaths among the members of the illegal armed group. The intensity and duration of the clash signaled a military operation that would be difficult to stop, leading Ecuadorian military units on the border to go on high alert. Security forces in the Cartagena region, located close to the scene, and surrounding areas were warned of a possible cross-border escape scenario, and observation points were strengthened.

Against the risk of the clash spreading across the border, the Ecuadorian Army demonstrated a strong military presence by deploying local troops stationed in the region as well as the 31st Andes Brigade. This preventive mobilization, which also included the use of armored vehicles, was supported by making military patrols along the border line continuous, with the aim of establishing full control in the region. 31st Andes Brigade Commander Franco Muñoz stated that the decision was made to guarantee national territorial integrity and prevent armed groups operating in the area from entering Ecuadorian territory under any pressure. The increased patrol activities and military display along the border serve to reassure the local population while sending a deterrent message to groups engaged in illegal activities.

This armed clash emerged as part of a large-scale operation conducted by the Colombian Army against structures linked to drug trafficking in the border region. Colombian military units successfully destroyed industrial-scale laboratories used in drug production as part of parallel operations, significantly reducing their production capacities. In an operation in the Potosi municipality, a laboratory with a monthly capacity of approximately three tons and a processing capacity of 2.5 tons of cocaine hydrochloride was completely destroyed. It is known that Ecuador is also aware of these operations and is developing joint struggle strategies, as such laboratories serve as a critical logistic center during cross-border transitions.

The scope of the operations deepened further with the identification and destruction of a massive structure belonging to the armed group named 'Comuneros del Sur' in the Santa Cruz municipality. In this mega-structure consisting of five facilities, nearly 32,500 gallons of liquid ready for drug processing and numerous chemical raw materials were seized. The facility's monthly cocaine production capacity of four tons reveals the extent to which the region is a drug production center. According to the Colombian Army's calculations, a total monthly cocaine production capacity of seven tons in the border region has been neutralized as a result of these recent operations. This process, which requires intense cooperation and coordination between Ecuador and Colombia to prevent smuggling activities and ensure peace, is of critical importance both militarily and diplomatically.
