Crocodile Warning for Tourists in Costa Rica: Signs Placed in Dangerous Areas

With the start of the half-year holiday in Costa Rica, government officials have launched a comprehensive security campaign to warn tourists and locals about potential dangers. Under this joint initiative by the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT) and the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MINAE), 55 warning signs have been placed on beaches, river mouths, and wetlands with high crocodile and caiman populations. The primary purpose of these signs is to prevent unwanted encounters and unfortunate consequences between humans and wildlife. Officials emphasize that these markings are only a precaution, and the issue can fundamentally be solved by people not intruding without permission into the natural habitats of these dangerous animals.
According to the implemented security protocols, in the first phase, warning signs were mounted specifically on river banks where the risk is high, such as Sixaola, Puerto Viejo, Banano, Bananito, Matina, Mawamba, and Caño Blanco. Additionally, precautions were increased at points with high human density, such as the Manzanillo de Cubano region, Lepanto bridge, and Playa Naranjo ferry dock. The aforementioned marking work will continue in the coming days in other tourist destinations in Guanacaste and the Central and South Pacific coasts. Since these regions are visited intensively by both domestic and foreign tourists, they were determined as priority safety areas.
It was reported that the project carried out is not limited to physical measures but also aims to raise social awareness. In line with the cooperation agreement signed between ICT and MINAE, training programs will be organized for guides and operators in the tourism sector, and educational materials will be distributed to the public. Costa Rican Tourism Institute President Marcos Borges stated in a declaration regarding the issue that these measures are essential to ensure human safety and protect wildlife during holiday periods. Additionally, Minister of Environment and Energy Mónica Navarro del Valle expressed that this initiative is one of the most important steps taken by the ministry to provide a safe environment for vacationers.
Biologists and conservation experts remind that there are two different crocodil species in the country, the American crocodile and the caiman, and that they play a critical role in the balance of the ecosystem. Although there is sometimes a misunderstanding in the public that these species are overpopulated, officials emphasize that these animals are necessary to maintain ecological balance, there is no population increase, and the problem stems from people's lack of respect for nature. Therefore, the campaign does not only involve hanging warning signs but also conveys the message that the natural habitats of these predators need to be protected.
Officials invite the public and tourists to strictly adhere to specific rules that need to be implemented to protect against crocodile attacks. Especially at sunrise and sunset hours, when animals are more active, swimming in river mouths should be avoided, and one should stay at least 50 meters away from these areas. Feeding crocodiles or other wildlife is strictly prohibited, and this action can trigger animals to approach humans and exhibit aggressive behavior. Furthermore, it is stated that children and pets should always be kept under supervision at the water's edge, one should move away calmly if any crocodile is seen, and the 1192 hotline should be informed in emergencies.
