Global fusion energy investments hit a record with 4.48 billion dollars

Global private investments in fusion energy have reached a record level of 4.48 billion dollars since last year. According to survey data announced by the Washington-based Fusion Industry Association (FIA), this figure increased by 69 percent compared to the previous year. The investment in question reveals the growing confidence in this developing sector, which is hoped to be moved from the laboratory environment to the grid in order to meet the increasing electricity demand.

Fusion reactors aim to produce large amounts of energy by combining light atoms such as hydrogen under extreme heat and pressure without greenhouse gas emissions or the formation of long-lived nuclear waste. The early 2030s are envisioned for this technology, which is still in the experimental stage, to start generating electricity commercially. Companies state that they need to overcome significant technical challenges, such as increasing reaction efficiency and developing materials resistant to neutron bombardment.

Although the USA is in a global leading position in terms of the number of private companies operating in the fusion field, the sector is noted to be largely dependent on private investments. In contrast, it is reported that state funding in China is about twice the support provided by the US government. On the other hand, major companies such as General Fusion and TAE Technologies taking steps to go public through initial public offerings (IPOs) indicates that the investment momentum in the sector has been taken to a new dimension.
