Warming Signals in Meloni-Trump Relations: Zampolli Says 'Relationship Improving'

After months of tension and diplomatic ruptures, warming signals emerged in the relations between Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and US President Donald Trump. Paolo Zampolli, US Special Representative for Global Partnerships, stated at the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio that relations are improving and that Rome Ambassador Tilman Fertitta is managing this process.

At the start of the relationship, Meloni attended Trump's January 2025 ceremony as the sole European leader and a natural affinity was observed. However, Italy's cautious stance on Middle East politics and regional crises including the Strait of Hormuz, the closure of the Sigonella air base to US bomber aircraft, and divergences on the Iran file led to tension. Trump launched personal attacks on Meloni, claiming she "begged for a photo" at the G7.

Meloni chose to soften the tension, emphasizing that Italy-US relations are far deeper and more rooted than leader personalities. In an interview with the New York Times, she admitted she thought cooperation with Trump would be easier. Zampolli's statements point to a repair process progressing in the background; Fertitta had described Meloni as a "world-class leader" in recent weeks.
