The latest report published by NATO reveals that Portekiz is expected to increase its defense spending to 2.1 percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by the end of this year. This rate means an increase of approximately 600 million euros in the country's defense budget compared to 2025. The document, which includes the investment estimates of the alliance's 32 member states, was prepared with data collected on 3 Haziran. Accordingly, Portekiz's total defense spending at the end of the year is projected to reach 6,7 billion euros. This situation once again confirms the country's determination to strengthen its defense capacity on an international scale.

According to the details of the report, Portekiz's defense budget in 2025 was realized at approximately 6,1 billion euros. With additional investments to be made until the end of the year, this figure is planned to reach 6,7 billion euros. Portekiz Savunma Bakanı Nuno Melo had previously announced in the Ulusal Meclis that the country allocated 2,01 percent of its GDP to defense in 2025. NATO's new report is in line with this statement and exactly matches the estimates. These data reveal that Portekiz follows a steady line in fulfilling its NATO membership obligations.

This new increase in the defense budget remains at a rather modest level compared to the previous year. During the transition period from 2024 to 2025, Portekiz increased its defense spending by 1,6 billion euros, recording the highest annual increase in the last decade. However, this year's planned increase of 600 million represents a very limited rise compared to last year's massive leap. Still, the Portekiz government's continuation of the tendency to increase defense investments remains in line with the general trend in Europe. The country will continue to shape its planned investments in the defense industry and military infrastructure within the framework of this new budget.

These developments are considered as part of a broader trend of increasing defense spending seen in European countries and Kanada. The significant withdrawal process seen in the financial military investment of the Amerika Birleşik Devletleri (ABD) in NATO has a great impact on this. At the NATO Summit held in Hollanda's Lahey during the previous period, a very ambitious new target was set for the alliance. Within the scope of this target, it was decided that member states should allocate at least 5 percent of their GDP to defense by 2035. While 3,5 percent of this rate is directly allocated to armed forces, equipment, and training, the remaining 1,5 percent will be allocated to infrastructure and defense industry investments.

On the other hand, the NATO Summit held in Türkiye's capital, Ankara, hosts critical agenda items that are expected to conclude this Wednesday. The meetings are taking place at the Cumhurbaşkanlığı Sarayı, with the primary agenda item being the increase in defense investments. In addition, strengthening the military production capacities of the alliance's member countries and deepening industrial cooperation constitute other important topics on the table. Finally, the scale and nature of the support to be provided to Ukrayna due to the ongoing war are also among the issues that leaders emphasize the most. All these issues are reshaping NATO's role in the global security architecture and the financial obligations of its members.
