The horrific accident that occurred yesterday at the 207th kilometer of the Niğde-Ankara highway, in the location of Babakonağı village of Aksaray province, happened when a bus conducting international passenger transportation lost control. In the incident, which is the subject of a prosecutor's investigation, the Mercedes brand passenger bus with the license plate 65 BJ 369, traveling from İstanbul towards Irak, left the road after the driver lost control of the steering wheel. The vehicle rolled directly into the embankment on the right side of the road without hitting any obstacles or another vehicle in front of it, causing a major tragedy. The route where the accident occurred is known as a critically important transit point, especially for intense intercity and international transit freight and passenger traffic. Authorities are trying to clarify the exact cause of the accident through scientific and forensic methods by collecting various evidence such as security lanes and skid marks during the initial examinations conducted at the scene.

With the impact of the accident, the front and side windows of the bus were completely shattered, and a total of 44 people inside the vehicle survived the incident with injuries. Among the injured in the vehicle were the bus driver Yahya A. and other vehicle personnel, including 41 passengers, the majority of whom were Irak nationals. Gendarmerie teams were dispatched to the region immediately after the accident, and a major evacuation operation was launched to ensure the injured did not suffer life-threatening conditions. The injured passengers and personnel were quickly transported from the scene by ambulances to the Emergency Departments of Aksaray Eğitim Araştırma Hastanesi and Ortaköy İlçe Devlet Hastanesi. It was reported that the injured, who are under intensive treatment at the hospitals, are being tried to be stabilized in terms of their general health conditions, and those whose lives are in danger are being kept in intensive care units.

Unfortunately, Hazim Ahmet Şahap, a 47-year-old Irak national among the injured passengers taken to the hospital, could not be saved despite all the interventions and efforts of the doctors. While Şahap's passing further increased the weight of this tragic accident, it caused great sorrow and anxiety among the relatives of the passengers as an international journey turned into a bloody end. This fatal accident led to condolences being offered to Şahap's family and loved ones, and also brought up discussions on the risks of long-distance international bus travel. While authorities continue the treatment of the other injured without interruption, a crisis desk was established by the hospital management by increasing the number of on-duty doctors and nurses. This incident once morethan painfully demonstrated how vital traffic safety rules and factors such as driver fatigue are for long-distance transportation corporations.

Regarding the matter, Aksaray Cumhuriyet Başsavcılığı announced that it launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident from the moment the accident occurred and that the investigation is still ongoing. The prosecutor's office has taken the data recording device, which we call the black box of the bus, for examination to definitively determine whether the accident was caused by a technical failure, driver error, or adverse weather-geographical conditions. It is stated that the driver Yahya A.'s statement was taken and the possibility of him being released under judicial control conditions is being considered, but 不同 legal processes will be operated depending on the outcome of the investigation. In addition, steps were taken to take the statements of the officials of the bus company, 'Best Van', and to inspect whether the vehicle's periodic maintenance and necessary safety measures were taken. This legal process is of great importance both to defend the rights of the deceased Şahap and to set a precedent to ensure that similar tragedies do not recur in the future.

This sad incident has led to the questioning of traffic safety standards and inspection mechanisms on our country's transit routes. Experts emphasize that the inspection of long-distance buses, especially those with foreign license plates or carrying foreign passengers, should be tightened, and that it is mandatory for drivers to take breaks at compulsory rest facilities at specific hours. Highway safety experts warn that an additional driver should be present or trips should be rescheduled, especially during night hours and krıtik time periods when fatigue levels increase. Traffic accidents are a solvable but unmanageable public health problem that causes thousands of people to die or become disabled every year. On this occasion, authorities remind that the complete inspection of all components in the road, vehicle, and driver triangle according to international standards is the only way to prevent irreversible consequences in protecting human life.
