Developments regarding the disappearance and subsequent painful death of 26-year-old construction engineer Pablo Osorio Sánchez from the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, have reignited debates over violence and human rights violations in the country. Osorio had vanished around 7:30 at a bus stop while being sent to work as a tunnel supervisor for a construction project in the La Concordia region of the state of Sinaloa in January 2026. A total of 10 other individuals who were in the same area and were reported to have been attacked at the time also disappeared simultaneously, a situation followed with deep concern by families and human rights organizations. Pablo's mother, Socorro Osorio Sánchez, identified her son's lifeless body at the Federal Forensic Medical Center (Centro Médico Forense Federal) and arranged for it to be released for burial in his home community of Ejido Ojo de Agua in Oaxaca. Following the identification, the engineer's funeral was held in a ceremony at the Tlaxiaco castle in early July 2026, where he met his loved ones for the last time before being laid to rest.

The Center for Consultancy on Human Rights and Indigenous Peoples (Cedhapi), which strives to clarify the event and provides legal support to the family, called for a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the process of the unfortunate engineer's murder on behalf of the Osorio family. The family and their lawyers are demanding not only the punishment of the perpetrators but also a detailed examination of secret mass graves discovered in the El Verde region of La Concordia municipality in Sinaloa and similar areas in other states. Another point of controversy was the failure of the Puebla-based company CICAR, for which Osorio was working at the time, to provide adequate assistance after the incident and sending the engineer to a risky region. Human rights defenders are calling on the state to effectively fulfill the warnings of the United Nations Committee on Enforced Disappearances and the precautionary measures of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) regarding the incident, and to take urgent measures to prevent the recurrence of such events.

Engineer Pablo Osorio started his career at the Tlaxiaco Technology Institute and was sent to do an internship at the company CICAR, operating in the state of Puebla, as part of his graduation project. The company assigned him to the region in June 2025 to work on tunnel constructions between kilometers 161 and 188 of the Durango highway, located in the municipality of La Concordia in the state of Sinaloa, approximately 40 minutes from Mazatlán and notable for security risks. It is a matter of curiosity whether adequate precautions were taken regarding the safety of the construction site and employees in the region and whether there was negligence on the part of the company and relevant authorities. Osorio's fate further increases concerns due to the high crime rates in the region and the activities of organized crime syndicates.

The reactions triggered by the incident were not limited to the family but resonated across wide segments of society, raising concerns particularly regarding the safety of indigenous communities and students. In a statement by Cedhapi, it was emphasized that support for the families of the disappeared should be increased, providing psychological, legal, and social assistance, and that human rights violations should not go unanswered. Furthermore, calls were made to strengthen policies to prevent disappearances to ensure the safety of those living in vulnerable regions like Oaxaca, for the state to actively activate urgent action mechanisms, and to fulfill its international obligations. The fact that the incident is seen as part of similar cases across the country once again revealed the need for in-depth investigations into the system's functioning.

The death of Pablo Osorio and the details that emerged subsequently laid bare the seriousness of enforced disappearance cases and violent incidents in Mexico and the devastating impact of this situation on society. The loss of the young engineer, a graduate of the Tlaxiaco Technology Institute, to such a tragedy at the beginning of his working life also brought to the fore the responsibilities of educational institutions and employers regarding employee safety. Family members and officials speaking at the funeral stated that Pablo was a loss not only for his own family but also for society, emphasizing that they would continue their struggle for the event not to be forgotten and for justice to be served. This tragic event has been etched into memories not only as personal pain but also as a concrete example for better understanding and finding a solution to the security and human rights situation in the country.
