A significant step has been taken for the construction of the sea-extending discharge line within the scope of the new wastewater treatment plant project in the Palma municipality of Spain's Balear Adaları region. Mayor of Palma Jaime Martínez and Regional Minister for the Sea and Water Cycle Juan Manuel Lafuente signed a protocol covering the discharge line and additional treatment lines of the new treatment station named EDAR II. With this protocol, the aim is to increase the current daily treatment capacity of 60.000 cubic meters to 90.000 cubic meters. Authorities consider the signed agreement a critical milestone in advancing a massive water infrastructure of vital importance for both Palma and a large part of the Mallorca island. The regional administration believes that this project will make a significant contribution to regional development in the name of sustainable water management and environmental protection.

The mega project, announced with a total budget of 60 million Avro, consists of two main components, and separate funds are allocated for these two components. While 22 million Avro of the said budget is allocated for the construction and equipment of the 5 and 6 treatment lines of the plant, the remaining 34 million Avro is allocated for the construction of the new discharge line. Five kilometers of this long discharge pipe, planned to be approximately seven kilometers in length, will dive directly into the Palma Körfezi and will go beyond the posidonia seagrass meadows, which are extremely important for the region's ecosystem. Authorities state that this design was carefully prepared in terms of protecting marine life and disposing of treated waters without harming the environment. This aspect of the project aims to increase technical capacity and protect the sensitive Mediterranean ecosystem simultaneously.

The said expansion and modernization works will enable the updating and significantly increase the capacity of one of the Balear Adaları's most critical water infrastructures. Thanks to the new system, the quality of wastewater treatment will increase, and the management of excessive water flows will become much more efficient. In addition, it is aimed to encourage the reuse of treated waters and utilize them in areas such as agricultural irrigation. Mentioning the regional government's persistent investment policies regarding water management, Official Lafuente stated that reprocessed waters are indispensable, especially for agricultural use. He also added that the quality of the waters discharged into the environment must be maintained, environmental guarantees must be observed, and the marine ecosystem must be protected.

The anticipated schedule for the construction works of the plant's 5 and 6 treatment lines has been clearly outlined. Although the testing processes for the EDAR II facility, which includes these lines, started as of 30 Haziran, it was noted that 2027 is indicated for the start of physical construction. Regarding the construction of the discharge line, Mayor Martínez stated that they desire the project to be implemented as soon as possible, but according to a realistic timeline, construction work could begin in 2028. It is stated that the detailed planning of the project has already been completed and that the necessary permits and authorizations are currently being obtained from various relevant public institutions.

Local governments emphasize that this project will have a significant impact on the country's economy, drawing attention to the fact that quality water obtained from treatment plants greatly benefits regional agriculture. It was recalled that reprocessed waters obtained from the EDAR II facility have already started to be used for agricultural irrigation in regions such as Son Ferriol and Sant Jordi. The Mayor recalled that the first agreement of 120 million Avro, which includes the first four treatment lines and encompasses a daily capacity of 60.000 cubic meters, was signed in 2021. It was reported that to strengthen the water infrastructure across the entire Balear Adaları, more than 100 treatment plant projects are actively carried out through the Abaqua institution, and an investment of over 120 million Avro has been made for these projects. All these efforts aim to consolidate the island's water security against the threats of climate change and increasing drought.
