Vehicle that veered off an embankment on Vía Expresa highway in Peru smashed to pieces

A serious traffic accident occurred in the early morning hours on the famous Vía Expresa highway in Lima, the capital of Peru. According to initial information obtained, a car containing a couple aged between approximately 30 and 35 lost control as a result of the driver falling asleep at the wheel. The vehicle, traveling from south to north, violently crashed into an iron railing near the Canadá station of the Metropolitano transportation system. The impact of the crash was so severe that the vehicle was smashed to pieces and its parts were scattered across the road. While the incident occurred at around 05.30 local time, authorities were immediately dispatched to the area.

Immediately after the accident, emergency teams belonging to the General Fire Department (Cuerpo General de Bomberos) were dispatched to the area. Firefighters managed to remove the couple, who were trapped inside the wrecked vehicle, following a meticulous rescue operation. It was learned that the casualties were not in life-threatening condition, but had sustained various injuries. The injured couple was taken to the hospital after receiving initial treatment at the scene. While authorities stated that the cause of the accident was the driver falling asleep, the investigation launched into the matter continues at full speed.

Traffic on the south-to-north lanes of Vía Expresa came to a complete halt, with the exception of a single lane.
