PTA Denies Device Installment Claims and Issues Social Media Warning

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has clarified that a notification circulating rapidly on social media in recent days, claiming that mobile device taxes can now be paid in installments, is entirely fabricated. In an official statement, the institution specified that the notification in question was fake and misleading the public, emphasizing that citizens should not trust unverified information. The PTA explicitly denied issuing any directive regarding such a tax installment scheme and stated that they do not have the authority to do so.

The Authority also touched upon the distribution of authority regarding the issue, reminding that the assessment, levying, and collection of taxes on mobile devices fall solely under the jurisdiction of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). It was reiterated that the PTA has no role in determining tax rates or altering payment terms, and that the decision-making body is the FBR. It was revealed that the PTA's mandate is limited to the registration of devices and managing compliance, and that they have no direct involvement in financial matters.

The PTA's primary responsibility in the current system was clarified as checking the legality of mobile devices and maintaining their records through the Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS). It was stated that the only factual content of recent public announcements was that planned maintenance work was being carried out in the DIRBS system, and some services might be temporarily inaccessible during this period.

Officials warned the public against unverified claims circulating on social media, expressing that caution should be exercised against the spread of such fake news and acting upon them. Citizens were advised to rely only on verified information using the PTA's official communication channels and website, and to avoid manipulative content.
