Russian Air Defense Announces Destruction of 116 Ukrainian Drones in 12 Hours

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced a major air defense operation, indicating a recent escalation in hostilities. According to an official statement from the ministry, Russian air defense systems successfully intercepted and destroyed a total of 116 Ukrainian-made unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) within a 12-hour timeframe. This number stands out as one of the highest counts of drones neutralized in a single day. The incident occurred over various regions of Russia, as well as over the waters of the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. The scale of the attack once again highlights the intensity of the conflict in the region and the increasingly prominent role of aerial threats.

Details regarding the large-scale interception took place on 6 Temmuz between 08.00 and 20.00 Moscow time. Russian military officials stated that the drones were sent simultaneously to numerous regions. Among the targeted areas where defense lines were activated are the capital Moskova and its surroundings, Kaluga, Tula, Tver, Belgorod, Bryansk, Kursk, Omsk, Leningrad, and Smolensk. Additionally, Krasnodar Krayı, Kırım Cumhuriyeti, and Başkurdistan Cumhuriyeti are among the locations affected by these air attacks. This broad geographic spectrum demonstrates that the attacks targeted not only border regions but also the interior parts of Russia.

Later in the day, the Ministry of Defense announced that it had repelled a separate Ukrainian drone attack aimed at civilian and energy infrastructure in the country's southwest. In this second incident, it was reported that out of a total of 625 attack drones, 613 were shot down by Russian air defense units. The interception of such a high number of attacks reveals the intensity and technical capacity of the current air defense systems. At the same time, the Russian army announced that it had launched a retaliatory air operation in response to the aforementioned attack. As part of this retaliation, it was stated that a missile-like strike was carried out, focusing on the capital Kiev and its surrounding regions, challenging early warning and defense systems.
