Fuel Shortage and Gasoline Lines in Russia: Social Impacts

The growing gasoline shortage across Russia is leading to long lines where hundreds of vehicles queue up. Particularly in the Zabaykalye region, it is reported that drivers wait for gasoline for 15-17 hours, and sometimes even more than a day. While the resulting tension occasionally turns into fights and angry posts on social media, police and national guard units are forced to maintain order at the stations.

The Russian people are responding to this new shortage, which is reminiscent of the Soviet era, with a kind of fatalism, submitting to the situation by stating that older generations also endured similar hardships. Just like in the past, efforts to cut in line through familiar state officials, searching for open pumps at midnight, and extra security measures against gasoline theft have become a part of daily life.
