Poet and Writer Ahmet Telli Sent on His Final Journey with a Ceremony Held in Ankara

Poet and writer Ahmet Telli, considered one of the important figures of Turkish literature and a pioneering representative of social realist poetry, passed away at the age of 79 in the hospital where he had been receiving treatment for a while. Following Telli's passing on July 10, a memorial ceremony was held for his loved ones and relatives at the Chamber of Civil Engineers conference hall in Necatibey, Ankara. In addition to his family, many artists, writers, and politicians attended the ceremony to pay their respects to the late poet. It was stated that Telli, whose body was buried in Karşıyaka Cemetery after the funeral prayer, left behind a rich literary legacy. His death caused great sorrow and resonance in the Turkish literary world.

At the memorial ceremony, the poet's daughter, Eylül Telli Büyük, thanked everyone who did not leave them alone during her father's illness. Büyük, who emphasized that her father dedicated his entire life to poetry and the pen, to which he was passionately devoted, gave an emotional speech to the attendees. In her speech, she described her father's footsteps, using the expressions: "Today, we gathered here not with the heaviness of a farewell, but around the light that a lifetime has left for us." Stating that her father had a stance that never remained silent against injustice and never excluded the love of humanity from his poems, she narrated his enduring legacy. These words revealed how strong Telli's moral and conscientious values were, alongside his literary personality.

There was also intense participation from the political community at the ceremony, once again revealing the poet's social charisma. DEM Party Co-Chair Tülay Hatimoğulları, DEM Party Ağrı Deputy Sırrı Sakık, and CHP Şanlıurfa Deputy Mahmut Tanal were present at the ceremony, standing by Telli's family at the funeral. Additionally, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Secretary General Mahir Polat attended the memorial ceremony and offered his respect to the poet. Although CHP Group Chair Özgür Özel could not physically attend the ceremony, he sent a wreath to express his condolences and respect for the late poet. This broad attendance demonstrated that Ahmet Telli was an intellectual who had won the hearts of not only literary circles but also different segments of society. During the ceremony, the attendees were deeply moved by a video presentation featuring moments from the poet's life and displaying his memories.

Born in Çankırı in 1946, Ahmet Telli successfully completed his education and worked as a teacher for a while, enlightening young minds. After his professional career, Telli turned entirely to literature, and his poems began to be published in respected literary magazines of the period starting from the 1970s. His poems were widely embraced by the masses for their sensitivity to the social issues of the time and their skillful expression of the people's pain. Considered one of the strongest voices of the social realist poetry movement in Turkey, the artist wrote dozens of valuable works not only in the field of poetry but also in the genres of essays and critiques. Telli, who guided Turkish literature with his works and became a source of inspiration for many young people, was always appreciated for his vocabulary and style. Thanks to this rich background, he succeeded in writing one of the unique pages of our literary history.

Following the memorial ceremony held, the poet's loved ones and family proceeded to Karşıyaka Mosque. After the funeral prayer held in the afternoon and the final blessings received, Ahmet Telli's body was laid to rest in Karşıyaka Cemetery. The crowd that gathered during the funeral prayer and burial procedures clearly showed what a beloved and respected figure he was. While the Turkish literary world mourns the physical loss of this valuable figure who dedicated his life to poetry, justice, and love of humanity, it makes his presence on the literary scene permanent through his works. Those rebellious yet equally hopeful lines in his poems will continue to be read and understood by future generations. Although the physical void left by Ahmet Telli's departure is great, he will always continue to be with us thanks to the countless lines he penned.
