Seoul Superintendent of Education Keun-sik Jeong: 'Education Problems Are Solved with Education'

Seoul Metropolitan Superintendent of Education Keun-sik Jeong accompanied the Baejae High School baseball team students involved in the controversy over mocking the 5·18 Democratization Movement to Gwangju. Visiting Gwangju First High School together with the students to ensure their apology was accepted and visiting the National 5·18 Democratic Cemetery, Jeong resolved the crisis through adult mediation before it turned into a legal and political dispute.

Jeong emphasized that this incident is not an end, but the beginning of educational recovery. He stated that the courage to apologize and the spirit of solidarity in embracing it are democratic citizenship values that students must carry for a lifetime. He also promised that the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education would make efforts to establish a healthy school sports culture based on fairness and mutual respect.

Making statements at the new building of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education under Namsan Tower after being re-elected, Jeong stated that the biggest shortcoming in the past one and a half years was the lack of implementation time. He expressed his continued confidence in education, stating that they now have the time to realize concrete changes.
