Temperature in Yakutya Region of Siberia Reaches 35 Degrees: Forest Fire Risk Increasing

Meteorology experts in the Yakutya Republic, located in the Siberia region of Russia, expect air temperatures to peak in the coming days, reaching up to 35 degrees. Along with this sudden temperature increase, thunderstorms prevalent in the region are causing the forest fire risk to rise significantly. Authorities warn that the temperature increase could reach an unusual level for this time of year. Experts predict that following the temperature peak expected in the middle of the week, meteorological conditions will change and the weather will cool down towards the weekend. The local population and authorities are on high alert to take all necessary measures against potential fire disasters.
Tatyana Marşalik, deputy head of the Yakutya Hydrometeorology Center, shared detailed information about weather forecasts and temperature trends in the region. According to Marşalik's statements, the heatwave is expected to be severe but short-lived. On Wednesday and Thursday, thermometers are expected to show between 30 and 35 degrees in the city of Yakutsk, as well as in the central and riverside areas. By the weekend, this warm air mass is expected to shift towards the south of the Tompon and Oymyakon regions. Experts emphasize that high temperature values are already prevailing in a large part of the Yakutya territory and a similar increase will be experienced in the Viluy region.
The temperatures in the region, which are currently above seasonal norms, will begin to decrease starting from 8-9 July in its northwestern parts. The process of decreasing temperatures will initially affect the northwestern and western regions, and will then spread to the central parts of Yakutya over the weekend. While thunderstorms are expected to accompany high temperatures in the central regions on Friday, an abrupt drop in temperatures is anticipated over the weekend. It is reported that on Saturday and Sunday, the air temperature will decrease by about 10 degrees, returning to 20 to 25 degrees. In the following days, it is stated that the temperature will not rise again and cloudy, rainy weather will prevail in the central regions and the capital, Yakutsk.
The main reason for this sudden temperature increase in Yakutya is the settlement of a warm air mass originating from the Primorye region. This meteorological anomaly directly affects the number of forest fires in the region, paving the way for them to reach dangerous proportions. As of the morning of 7 July, it was reported that 57 active forest fires were continuing and that some were being attempted to be brought under control by the same firefighting teams. The combination of prolonged lack of precipitation, dry, and hot weather causes forested areas to become highly vulnerable. Thermal hotspots emerging after lightning and thunderstorms in the sky lead to fires starting within seconds in wooded areas.
Authorities state that the intense thunderstorm activity has pushed the fire risk to the highest level. While it was announced that the forest fire danger level is at the fifth, meaning the highest level, especially in the Mountainous region and Yakutsk, the Viluy group and central regions are also marked as fourth-level high danger. The absence of precipitation in these critical regions stands out as the most significant factor preventing the current risk level from being lowered. Experts add that caution is necessary as any thunderstorm event could trigger forest fires. Due to all these developments, authorities are considering the possibility of applying an extraordinary regional fire safety regime in Yakutya.
