Snapchat's resurgence: Haaland effect and global restructuring process

Snapchat officially announced in June 2026 that it has undertaken a comprehensive restructuring plan globally and laid off more than 1000 personnel, corresponding to 16% of its employees. The company stated that it had to resort to such a harsh and drastic measure to reduce the financial losses it has continuously suffered since its inception and to stop its economic losses. Although it tries to maintain its popularity in the technology world, the company's financial situation in recent years is described as dismal. This major layoff wave creates question marks about how it will shape the company's future strategies.

Financial analysts have reported in detail that the company lost 460 million dollars in its 2025 fiscal year and could not close any of its 15-year commercial history with a profit since its inception. Despite having 946 million monthly active users worldwide, Snapchat's ad revenues remain at much lower levels compared to its competitors, and its data structure is seen as inadequate in this regard. The company is unfortunately having great difficulties in effectively monetizing its vast user base and increasing profitability. The preference of advertisers for rival ecosystems like Meta, which are more data-oriented, deeply shook the company's revenue model.

In the past, when it was launched in 2011, its feature that made it unique and prominent, especially in communication and messaging, was that the sent multimedia files would disappear on their own after a while. The firm, which pioneered the industry by inventing this feature, later struggled to grow outside the English-speaking geography and began to lose blood. During this stagnation period, its competitors, major tech companies, integrated interfaces similar to Snapchat's self-destructing feature into their own platforms and became more efficient. In particular, Instagram's adoption of the story format and its support by Meta went down in history as one of the most critical factors that caused Snapchat's market share to erode seriously.

The biggest reason for the app's return to the agenda and the increase in its popularity currently is the world-famous Norwegian footballer Erling Haaland's active use of the platform. Haaland's frequent use and sharing of Snapchat's augmented reality-based filters, in particular, helped the application expand its demographic structure and reach new audiences. This situation revived the company's technical infrastructure and provided a temporary rise in user interaction, especially by increasing the interest of football fans in the platform. The popularity of the footballer partly changed the negative perception the company was exposed to.

The operational restructuring process initiated under the management of Chief Executive Officer Evan Spiegel aims to completely redefine the company's future investment strategies. The company aims to increase efficiency by directing its resources only to geographies where it can obtain higher revenue and to regions with high conversion rates. According to the plan, it is envisaged to save over 500 million dollars annually thanks to cost cuts and to transfer this money to strategic investments. This move is described as the most important step in Snapchat's long-term survival struggle.
