The Most Expensive Software Bug in History: The Missing Symbol That Caused the Fall of Mariner 1

On the evening of 22 July 1962, Mariner 1, the first spacecraft sent by the United States to another planet, was launched from Cape Canaveral aboard an Atlas-Agena rocket. However, exactly 293 seconds after launch, because the rocket deviated towards populated areas, a safety officer had to destroy the rocket. Rather than surface features, the spacecraft was equipped with scientific instruments such as radiometers, cosmic dust detectors, and a plasma spectrometer; it was tasked with taking direct measurements of the planet's atmosphere and temperature and sending the information to Earth. In 1962, data obtained from telescopes regarding what lay beneath Venus's dense cloud layer could not provide definitive information; it was completely unknown whether there were oceans, deserts, or terrible heat on the planet's surface. The mission was of vital importance to satisfy this curiosity and understand the structure of planets. Unfortunately, the spacecraft met a bitter end before it could even leave Earth's lower atmosphere.

At the root of the disaster lay the complex nature of the technological infrastructure at the rocket's launch and how two different ground-based radar systems operated. The guidance of the Atlas-Agena rocket depended on the harmonious operation of two separate radar systems: the 'Rate System', which measured speed, and the 'Track System', which measured distance and angle. These two systems transmitted signals to computers on the ground, and the computers combined the data to send corrective commands back to the rocket. However, the failure of these two radars to transmit their signals simultaneously caused a minor time delay of 43 milliseconds in the system. To compensate for this delay and smooth out potential fluctuations (noise) in the raw data, a special mathematical formula that averaged the speed data over time was added to the computer code.

During the software phase of the code, while it was being transcribed by hand, a horizontal line meant to be drawn over a variable in the mathematical equation—an 'overbar'—was left out. In mathematics, this line drawn over a symbol indicates that the value is not raw, but processed and smoothed data. The absence of this mark allowed the equation to still run; however, instead of the filtered data, the computer began making calculations directly based on the flawed and fluctuating raw radar data. Because the radar hardware worked flawlessly during the testing phase, this flaw was never detected, and the rocket's fate was sealed at the critical moment.

Immediately after the launch, the simultaneous occurrence of two problems brought an end to the mission. First, a minor malfunction occurred in the 'Rate System' hardware; under normal conditions, this was a problem that could have been overcome thanks to the 'Track System'. However, due to the missing overbar, the backup calculation system was not functioning and mistook the noise for actual movement. The computer began sending continuous and incorrect corrective commands to the rocket to fix a non-existent oscillation, which initiated a chain reaction. The increasing erroneous maneuvers drove the rocket towards populated areas and maritime traffic. Shortly before the upper-stage rocket separation, the Safety Officer, who had only a few seconds to make a decision, had to destroy the rocket in mid-air to prevent major loss of life and property. The spacecraft broke apart and plunged into the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
