24 Migrants Arriving by Boat from Türkiye to Samothrace Island Caught

Following the arrival of irregular migrants on the Greek island of Samothrace (Samotraki) in a rubber boat believed to have departed from the Turkish coastline, coast guard teams launched a large-scale operation. The mobilization, which began in the early hours of Tuesday morning, was triggered after local port authorities received information about a suspicious boat navigating the "Agkistro" maritime area. Coast guard teams rapidly dispatched to the area conducted simultaneous search operations both at sea and on land. As part of the operation, patrol boats and land vehicles were utilized together to systematically scan different parts of the island. As a result of the authorities' coordinated intervention, the group of migrants who had slipped into the area were detected shortly after.

During the search efforts, it was determined that the migrants were hiding in a semi-mountainous terrain near the "Lagkadioti" beach on the island. Upon the teams' arrival at the location, the presence of a total of 24 foreign nationals was confirmed. The fact that the migrant group consisted of six men, seven women, and eleven minor children highlighted how dangerous the migration journey is and how it involves vulnerable groups. This situation once again brought to mind the exposure of children and women to life-threatening dangers in the Aegean Sea. Coast guard personnel provided basic needs and first aid support to the migrants immediately upon their capture. A meticulous search was carried out, considering the possibility that the migrants might have been lost for hours in the dark and rugged terrains of the island.

The captured migrants were safely transferred to the Samothrace First Port Directorate (A' Limanikó Tmíma) for processing and assessment of their status. The detained individuals are expected to be subsequently dispatched to temporary accommodation centers or relevant authorities for deportation procedures. Greek authorities continue their policy of increasing patrols in the islands region against such human smuggling incidents occurring across the Aegean Sea. Although the island of Samothrace is more isolated compared to other islands on the route due to its geographical location, it has recently started to become a more frequent target. The investigation continues extensively to capture the drivers operating the vessels in such incidents. Authorities emphasize the importance of international cooperation to stop irregular migrant trafficking in the region.

Due to its location in the Northern Aegean, the island of Samothrace is situated relatively close to the mainland and Türkiye's Çanakkale coastline. Although the island is a famous tourist attraction known for its natural beauty, this geographical feature also causes it to be used as a destination for dangerous migration attempts with shallow rubber boats. The island's rugged and mountainous terrain provides areas where migrants can seek shelter and try to hide after landing. This situation technically makes search and rescue operations more challenging. The recent incident reveals that a migration crisis on this isolated island poses serious challenges in terms of physical infrastructure and humanitarian capacity. Local resources risk being insufficient during sudden influxes, highlighting the need for a flow of national support.

The ongoing influx of migration across the Aegean Sea remains a long-standing controversial and tense issue between Türkiye and Greece. While Greek authorities present such incidents as part of their efforts to prevent irregular migration and protect their borders, human rights organizations express concerns regarding pushbacks by sea and the exposure of migrants to severe weather conditions. Human traffickers' exploitation of hope and organized crime networks are the main reasons for these journeys spiraling out of control and endangering lives in Aegean waters. The European Union's border protection mechanisms, such as Frontex, are also striving to provide more effective surveillance across the islands. Such local operations, which have increased in recent years, are merely a small reflection of the international migration issue, which is closely monitored globally. The creation of a joint and permanent political strategy by both Türkiye and Greece to resolve this humanitarian crisis remains on the agenda of the international community.
