Innovative Project from UBSI Students Digitalizing Rural Services: SiMPeDa

Students from the UBSI (Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika) Pontianak campus, located in the Kubu Raya region of Endonezya, have launched a new technological initiative aimed at accelerating digital transformation in rural areas. The developed innovative project aims to improve the quality and speed of services provided by local governments to the public. Such technological initiatives are of great importance, especially in developing countries, in order to close the digital divide in rural areas. These qualified projects produced by university students for social problems also reveal how education can be directly integrated into practical life. The support of local governments in the region for such innovative ideas positively affects the implementation process of the projects.

At the center of the initiative in question is a system developed by students aiming to digitalize village (desa) administrations. Through this system, village heads and local administrators will be able to conduct the public services they offer much more efficiently, transparently, and regularly. Thanks to digitalization, it is also planned to prevent village residents from dealing with bureaucratic procedures that would take days for administrative affairs. The instant recording of local people's demands and complaints into the system will allow problems to be solved more quickly. The main goal of the project is to maximize efficiency in public administration by using technology directly for the benefit of the public.

In countries spread over a vast geographical area and consisting of tens of thousands of islands, such as Endonezya, the digitalization of local governments is a massive logistical and administrative necessity. Because the healthy flow of data from villages to the central government or provincial administrations can only be possible with strong digital infrastructures. Students of IT-focused universities like UBSI make significant individual contributions to their country's digital transformation vision. Such small but effective technological steps taken at the village level are laying the foundations that will expand over time and improve the digital ecosystem of the entire country. Moreover, these projects not only digitalize existing systems but also increase local software and system development capacity, providing long-term benefits to the national technology ecosystem.

This innovative approach developed by the students is not limited to the acceleration of public services but also strengthens the principles of local governance and transparency. Keeping citizens' records, petitions, or official requests in a digital environment minimizes potential human errors. The increase of public scrutiny through digital platforms also plays an effective role in preventing negative situations such as corruption. Thanks to the developed software, issues such as how village budgets are used and where public resources are allocated can be made public. All these innovative applications are considered important diplomatic and social steps that will help increase the public's trust in the state and local governments.

In rural areas where digital literacy is relatively low, the implementation of such technological systems can bring some challenges. Therefore, in order for the developed projects to be sustainable, the local people and especially village authorities need to be given comprehensive training on digital systems. In areas where the internet infrastructure is insufficient, it is of great importance that these softwares have the capacity to work offline or that infrastructure improvements are made. Nevertheless, such academic-based initiatives serve a successful bridge function in gradually adapting segments unfamiliar with technology to the digital world. This promising student project in Endonezya creates an inspiring model for the digital transformation of rural public services for other developing regions of the world.
