Following two major earthquakes with magnitudes of 7,2 and 7,5 that shook Venezuela on Wednesday, 24 June, social media giant Facebook activated its emergency tool to ensure the safety of its users. This platform, owned by Meta, activated the 'Safety Check' feature to quickly learn the status of individuals in disaster areas and communicate with them. Thanks to this feature, users gained the ability to instantly learn whether their families and friends were in the region and whether they were safe. Thus, it was aimed to prevent a possible communication crisis and to enable people to get news from their loved ones. Preserving communication channels in destructive natural disasters such as earthquakes stands out as a vital process.

The safety tool in question was first developed and put into use following the disaster that occurred in Japan in 2011 and subsequently caused a massive tsunami. The intense phone line and network lockups experienced during that period revealed that a technological solution needed to be found, as it prevented emergency lines from working. The main purpose of the tool is to alleviate possible congestion in physical telephone networks and to ensure that the communication of emergency teams continues uninterruptedly. Initially launched manually in its early years, this system has evolved over time into a much more comprehensive structure. Facebook users located in the affected area are automatically identified by the system, and a notification is sent directly to them via the platform. Users get the chance to announce to their entire circle that they are safe with a single click through this notification. In addition, the system not only allows the person to report their own status but also provides a comprehensive list of whether other contacts in the application are safe. Thanks to this, both the local people in the disaster areas and their relatives who are international or out of town can access instant and reliable information flow regarding the crisis.

The steps users need to follow to benefit from this system and access necessary information during a disaster are designed to be extremely simple and user-friendly. Users who open the Facebook application during a disaster can start the process by clicking on the main menu located in the upper right corner of the screen. When the 'Community Resources' section is entered from the opened menu tab, the 'Emergency Response' option appears. Through this tab, various emergency scenarios that are on the agenda of the world or the region on that current date are listed in detail.
