Newly hung wallpaper usually offers a flawless and smooth appearance until those annoying seam separations occur. These ugly cracks and separations that appear in a corner or in the middle of the wall instantly ruin the overall appearance of the room, creating an unkempt atmosphere. Most people's first instinct might be to immediately mix a bucket of paste and re-cover the entire wall, but this is usually an unnecessary effort. In nine out of ten cases, instead of taking massive measures, a delicate procedure with items easily found at home is sufficient. Thanks to the right tools and a bit of meticulousness, it is entirely possible to solve this problem in seconds with a professional look.

For thin and delicate paper-based wallpapers, the biggest problem is the risk that liquid adhesives can cause stains and waviness. To solve this problem, using dry glue sticks, a practical method frequently used by painters, is a great solution. Since the stick glue does not penetrate the entire paper, the risk of the material deforming drops to zero. During application, the separated edge should be carefully lifted, the stick should be applied to both the wall and the back of the paper, and then it should be pressed smoothly with a clean, dry roller or cloth. This method offers an extremely practical solution in terms of providing instant adhesion and allowing excess glue to be easily cleaned.

Vinyl, fiberglass, or dense wallpapers with a heavier structure are too heavy to hold with a simple stick glue. For such thick materials, the most effective solution is to use an ordinary medical syringe and construction PVA glue. By going under the separated edge with the tip of the syringe, the adhesive is carefully injected into the gap, thus the material gets an excellent grip. The main reason PVA glue is preferred is that it becomes completely transparent when it dries and does not yellow over time. After the process is finished, to prevent air bubbles from forming, the edge should be pressed from the center outwards with the help of a rubber spatula, and excess glue should be cleaned immediately with a damp cloth.

Sometimes the reason for the opening of wallpaper seams is not a lack of adhesive, but the fact that the existing adhesive has dried over time and lost its function. This is a frequently encountered problem, especially on sun-exposed walls or right next to radiators. The thermal reactivation method applied to revive the old adhesive is performed using an iron and a cotton cloth. After covering the problematic area with the cloth, the iron should be gently moved over the area at a very low temperature and without using steam. The heat allows the adhesive to soften, and when the area is then pressed with a roller, the cooling adhesive dries again and holds the paper.

A similar softening effect can also be achieved by using a hair dryer to blow hot air towards the opened edge. This method offers an extremely economical and eco-friendly alternative that does not contain any chemicals. No matter which repair method is applied, it is highly important not to stress or test the area for at least a few hours immediately after the procedure. Not rubbing the repaired seam or hanging heavy objects on it allows time for the adhesive to fully cure. Thanks to a patient and correct application, the walls can maintain a masterful appearance just like the first day for many years.
