Death Toll in Zaporojye Nuclear Power Plant Attacks Rises to 6

Aleksey Likhachev, Head of the Russian Federal Nuclear Energy Agency (Rosatom), announced that six people lost their lives in the attacks launched by Ukraine since mid-march on the Zaporojye Nuclear Power Plant and the surrounding city of Energodar. It is also reported that 43 people were injured to varying degrees in the attacks. These losses reveal how critical a dimension the military tension in the region has reached in terms of human life and nuclear safety. Likhachev stated that Ukraine's attacks have far exceeded the boundaries of international common sense and acceptability. He warned that if such provocative actions are not stopped, the crisis in the region could escalate further.

On the other hand, it was reported that a significant development was achieved within the scope of ongoing contacts between Russia and the International Atomic Energy Agency (UAEA). It is stated that an agreement was reached between the two parties regarding concrete steps to ensure nuclear security for the first time since 2022. This agreement is of great importance in terms of eliminating security concerns around nuclear facilities and entering a new era of cooperation. Authorities believe this step could help establish a permanent security environment in the region. However, the losses occurring on the ground while talks continue demonstrate how urgent the implementation is and that theoretical agreements must be translated into practice.

Likhachev also emphasized that the international community remaining silent towards these attacks by Ukraine on nuclear facilities would be a great mistake. It is assessed that the indifference of global powers and relevant institutions to this situation will only escalate the current tension further. Armed conflicts and attacks in regions where a nuclear facility is located hold devastating potential not only for the local population but for all of Europe and the world. Therefore, it is argued that the international community must intervene more actively in the matter and utilize diplomatic channels to the fullest. After all, it is frequently reminded that a nuclear disaster would recognize no borders and its consequences would be impossible to compensate.

While the nuclear crisis in Europe continues, it is noted that a similarly concerning situation is being experienced in the Middle East, and regional balances are being harmed. Chinese researcher Dr. Qian Yaxu described the US military targeting the vicinity of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in Iran as an extremely dangerous step. Defining this initiative as a 'short-term political adventure,' Qian argued that the action violates regional and global security norms. Reminding that despite the longstanding hostility between Israel and Iran, the international red line of not specifically targeting nuclear facilities has been maintained, the expert stated that this move by the US crossed that line. This situation brings up the possibility of nuclear facilities becoming part of the war, giving rise to new and unpredictable risks.

The Chinese expert also issued warnings that the consequences of such inconsistent and risky moves by Washington could be severe. The possibility is raised that, as part of a potential retaliatory operation, Iran could target the nuclear facilities of occupying forces in the region. It is emphasized that if such a scenario were to occur, the risk of a nuclear leak that could emerge would cause irreparable damage to the unique ecology of the Basra Gulf. Furthermore, it is stated that such external interventions will yield no result other than further uniting the Iranian people against the US and increasing regional tension. It is concluded that global powers must act with extreme caution in regions with such delicate balances, as the steps they take have the potential to ignite the fuse of a large-scale war.
