In the town of Castelnuovo, located in Prato, Italy, the life of 76-year-old Graziano Grassi completely changed thanks to the extraordinary solidarity of his neighbors and friends. This former factory worker, who became disabled due to a progressive illness and could not leave his home for four full years, can now step out into the outside world once again. Because it had become impossible for him to go down from his apartment on the first floor of his building, he could only go out for medical examinations by being carried down with the help of volunteer ambulance teams. However, a stairlift purchased as a result of a fundraising campaign initiated by the townspeople granted Graziano his freedom once again. The beginning of the process that made Graziano Grassi's life a prison is based on a progressive illness that emerged after he retired from the textile factory where he had worked for years. This condition prevented him from doing even simple daily activities on his own and made it completely impossible for him to use stairs. Graziano, who lives on the first-floor apartment in the church square in Castelnuovo with his wife Anna and his family, had to live a completely isolated life from the outside world for years. In fact, although they had a beautiful garden on the ground floor, he could not even go out to this space due to his illness. During the most difficult period of his life, the volunteer services he used to provide for the church congregation were replaced by a silent wait within the four walls of his home.

However, with the arrival of spring, Graziano's friends in the church association could not remain indifferent to his difficult situation and began looking for a way to get him outside again. This initiative, which initially started with questions they asked only among themselves, soon turned into a great solidarity movement involving the entire town. They began researching how much it would cost to buy a stairlift and whether the existing stairs were suitable for it. Soon, people promised to do everything in their power to achieve this goal. Thus, this project, which was initially just the idea of a few people, became a common mission embraced by the entire community.

According to the statements of Piero Baroncelli, the vice president of the church association, achieving this goal was possible in a short period of just two months. The community raised over 10,000 Euro through dinners, fundraising events, bingo days, and the contributions of anonymous private donors, and this amount was enough to cover the entire cost of the stairlift. Additionally, the Emmaus community, the church choir, and numerous volunteers worked with great dedication during this process. The choristers expressed that this initiative went beyond the walls of the church, turning into a concrete act of solidarity, and that everyone's voice and effort brought about this result. This was not just about purchasing a machine, but also a very concrete demonstration of people's love and devotion to one another.

The morning the stairlift was officially opened became an unforgettable memory for the town of Castelnuovo, and many people gathered to share that moment. When Graziano Grassi reached the ground floor with this chair for the first time after a four-year break, he could not control his emotions and shed tears of joy. Don Matteo Lombardi, the town's priest who never neglected to visit him and blessed the device, also drew attention to the significance of this spiritual moment.
