Almanya to reduce its military presence in Erbil in September with the end of the IŞİD mission

Almanya Dışişleri Bakanı Johann Wadephul announced that his country has decided to significantly reduce its military presence in the Erbil city of Irak'ın. The main reason for this decision is that the international mission against the Islamic State (IŞİD), also known as DEAŞ, will officially come to an end in Eylül. Wadephul clarified this issue during a joint press conference with his Sloven counterpart Tone Kajzer in Berlin. The Minister stated that the mission will be ultimately completed upon the request of the Iraqi government, and this has initiated the withdrawal process of the international coalition. The process in question is considered a harbinger of a significant change in the security architecture of the region.

The international military mission launched against the Islamic State was implemented in 2015 with broad global cooperation. In this context, 80 different states and five international organizations took sides alongside allied forces to end the terrorist organization's tyranny. As an active member of this coalition, Almanya deployed 500 military personnel to the region during its most intense period. These personnel of the Alman Silahlı Kuvvetleri'nin (Bundeswehr) undertook various support and operational duties over the years. The ultimate end of the international mission means the official closing of the period of multinational military cooperation in the region.

The Alman Dışişleri Bakanı emphasized that a large portion of the military personnel will leave the region, but a complete withdrawal may not be in question. Stating that their government continues to discuss this reduction process in detail, Wadephul added that strategic steps are being taken. The Minister stated that he believes Almanya should not completely sever its ties with Erbil, because he expressed that this is both correct and necessary for foreign policy. These statements indicate Berlin's desire to maintain a certain sphere of influence in the region even after counter-terrorism operations end. The size and nature of Almanya's possible future presence will be clarified depending on the ongoing negotiations within the government.

It emerged that before the official statements of the news, the issue was also brought up by Der Spiegel, one of Almanya's leading weekly publications. The magazine reported that the Alman Savunma Bakanlığı'nın had previously made the decision to withdraw its troops in Erbil. Accordingly, Alman soldiers undertook important humanitarian and security duties during their time in the region. They played a critical role, especially in the training and capacity building of the security forces of the Kürdan Bölgesel Yönetimi'nin in northern Irak'ın. Training activities were at the center of comprehensive programs designed to increase the skills of local security units to defend their own regions.

The mission in Erbil went down in history as one of the most important and comprehensive international military deployments Almanya has carried out in the last decade. This coalition, formed after DEAŞ captured large areas in Irak and Suriye, was decisive in the military collapse of the terrorist organization. However, with the Islamic State largely destroyed as a physical entity and local governments regaining control, the completion of the mission came to the agenda. This withdrawal of Alman troops is seen as a result of efforts to preserve the territorial integrity and reinforce the sovereignty of Irak. Regional powers and allies continue to work on new security strategies against the changing nature of the terrorist threat, even if it has not ended.
