The United Nations has taken action following warnings that the El Niño weather event is strengthening and could be one of the most severe in recent years. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP) have issued an emergency funding appeal for $202 million to mitigate the impacts of extreme drought, heavy rainfall and floods.
According to models, this phenomenon could affect more than 8.8 million people in 22 high-risk countries. It is expected to put serious pressure especially on agriculture, water resources and food security. UN agencies emphasize that rapid financing is needed to prevent the humanitarian crisis from deepening in these regions.
The World Meteorological Organization is also calling for the strengthening of early warning systems. The aim is to better monitor extreme climate events and natural disasters; to detect in advance possible impacts in agriculture, health, water and civil protection.
