Natural Gas Explosion in Çorlu: 2 Dead, 5 Injured

An accident that occurred in the Çorlu district of Tekirdağ and caused great sadness paralyzed an apartment building. A severe explosion occurred on the top floor of the 6-story building, which is thought to have been caused by a natural gas leak according to initial determinations. Five of our citizens who were injured were taken to the nearest healthcare facilities by ambulances for emergency treatment, and their health conditions are being closely monitored. Evacuation procedures were carried out for security reasons in the apartment building where the incident occurred and surrounding buildings, and entry and exit to the area were temporarily restricted. Authorities took extensive security measures to prevent the risk of a possible second explosion and to ensure the situation was fully brought under control.

Following the accident, expert teams dispatched to the region launched a detailed investigation to determine the definitive cause of the explosion and to prevent similar disasters. Whether the explosion was caused by natural gas use or points to another technical malfunction constitutes the most important part of the judicial and technical investigation. All possibilities, such as the natural gas infrastructure of the buildings, possible deficiencies in the installation, and usage errors, are being evaluated and reported one by one. The Çorlu Municipality fire teams who arrived to intervene at the scene completely brought the fire under control by spraying water onto the building from a height with pool vehicles and began cooling operations. Security measures were kept at the highest level in the area due to the smoke emitted during the fire-fighting efforts and the continuing tremors. Intense effort was spent to ensure that no negativity occurred that would endanger the lives of the building residents and those nearby. Within the scope of the works, the statics and damage status of the structures were also examined by engineers, and a security cordon was drawn.

Frequently checking the devices used to detect gas leakage, not delaying chimney and flue cleaning, and regularly having installation maintenance done are the most concrete steps to be taken to prevent such disasters.
