Natural Gas Explosion in Çorlu: 2 Dead, 2 Injured, and Building Rendered Unusable

A terrible explosion that occurred during the night hours in the Çorlu district of Tekirdağ shook the entire neighborhood, plunging local residents into great panic. The explosion, which occurred around 23.00 in the apartment where a Syrian family lived on the top floor of the 6-story Adalet Apartmanı located in Cemaliye Mahallesi Borsa Meydanı, caused such severe impact that surrounding structures were also damaged. Due to the force of the explosion, serious damage occurred in 3 adjacent apartments on the same floor, the front facade wall of the building partially collapsed, and the windows were completely shattered. Citizens who were in the building and the surrounding area at the time of the incident experienced great shock and fear, and had to quickly evacuate the buildings to ensure their safety. A large number of police, firefighting, health, and AFAD teams dispatched to the region arrived at the scene and launched a comprehensive search, rescue, and intervention operation.

Immediately after the emergency teams reached the area, an intensive intervention process began in the secured zone. The fire that broke out in the apartment, the epicenter of the explosion, was extinguished by the rapid and effective intervention of the firefighting teams, preventing surrounding structures from suffering further damage. It was determined that 33-year-old Muhammet el Hüseyin, who was found to be alone in the apartment during the incident, was thrown approximately 60 meters away by the massive pressure effect created by the explosion and lost his life. Additionally, it was understood that Caner Meriç and his wife Songül Meriç, who were in the neighboring apartment at the time of the explosion, and Mehmet Zurnacı, who was passing by the scene, sustained various injuries. Caner Meriç, one of the injured taken to the hospital whose condition was severe, could not be saved despite all the life-saving efforts of the doctors and passed away, while the condition of the other injured was reported to be mild.

Çorlu Kaymakamı Niyazi Erten, who arrived at the scene to conduct inspections and closely monitored the work, made important statements to journalists to inform the public. Stating that as a result of the technical investigations carried out, it is believed the explosion was caused by natural gas, Kaymakam Erten emphasized that the matter is being meticulously investigated. Noting that a total of 89 citizens reside in the apartment, Erten stated that due to the incident, the building was temporarily and completely evacuated for security reasons and entry and exit were prohibited. He added to his words that immediate solutions were produced to meet the shelter needs of the citizens who were forced to leave their homes, and that relevant institutions were on duty. Furthermore, he confirmed that 3 people were taken to the hospital due to the incident, one of whom lost their life, and that with the previous death, the total death toll rose to 2.

With the first lights of the morning, the true extent of the devastation hidden in the darkness of the night came to light, revealing a scene resembling a war zone in the area. The residents of the apartment, who were forced to spend the night in hotels and their relatives' homes, returned to the area in the morning hours to see their homes and assess the situation with their own eyes. The teams from the Çevre, Şehircilik ve İklim Değişikliği İl Müdürlüğü initiated a detailed technical inspection to measure the structural safety of the building and assess the risk of collapse. The Çorlu Belediyesi teams also tightened security measures in the area and accelerated the debris removal and environmental cleaning operations. The police teams completely cordoned off the dangerous building with security tapes over a wide radius, strictly preventing curious citizens and journalists from entering.

Nuri Küçükler, one of the neighborhood residents, stated that the force of the explosion was too great to be described with words, revealing the horror they experienced that night. Stating that people were completely shocked and threw themselves outside in great panic to find out the condition of their loved ones, Küçükler described those painful and fear-filled moments in all their nakedness. Additionally, the terrifying footage of the moment of the explosion was reflected second by second on the security camera of a nearby workplace, once again revealing the magnitude of the incident. In the footage, it was revealed with full clarity that glass and concrete pieces flying from the facade of the building after the explosion scattered onto the street, showing the chaos people experienced to survive.
