Indonesia's KPK Reveals Langkat Mayor's Election Team Involved in 85 Projects

The Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) shared a striking detail of an investigation into administrative corruption cases in the Langkat region of Sumatra with the public. According to the statement, the election team members working for the successful election of Langkat Mayor Syah Afandin during the 2024 local election campaign were in a major conflict of interest. Active figures such as Yaqub Abdhal Al Mu’arif, mentioned in the investigation records, are alleged to have obtained unfair gains from state tenders in exchange for political support. This situation reveals how weak the transparency and accountability mechanisms in local governments are and has created wide repercussions in the public.

Findings obtained regarding the issue show that the election team members and their close circles acted as contractors or intermediaries for a total of 85 different projects undertaken by the Langkat Regional Government. The total financial value of these projects is estimated to be approximately 10.2 billion Rupiah (approximately 600 thousand US Dollars). KPK investigators stated that they obtained strong evidence that all or a significant part of these projects were directed to relevant individuals through direct appointments or arbitrary decisions, without going through transparent tender processes. Such a concentration would not happen by chance under normal market conditions and clearly points to an organized criminal structure.

Viewed from the context of political ethics and legal regulations, it constitutes a serious crime for an election candidate's campaign team members to collect state projects in the same term or immediately before it. KPK officials emphasize that such structures usually use state resources as 'rent' to meet the financing needs in election campaigns. Whether Langkat Mayor Syah Afandin had knowledge or approval regarding this matter is one of the most critical points of the investigation. If there is a direct order or knowledge of the mayor, this situation will go down in records as one of the most concrete examples of 'cash-for-work' or similar political bribery networks in the country.
