FIFA rejects Belgium's appeal against the lifting of Balogun's suspension

The FIFA Appeal Committee has definitively rejected the appeal application filed by the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA). Belgian officials had launched a legal battle against the lifting of the suspension given to American forward Folarin Balogun following the red card he received in the World Cup Round of 16. In its official statement on the matter, FIFA emphasized that the Belgian Association did not have the legitimacy to appeal the decision on the grounds that it was not a direct party to the process. This decision forms a significant part of a legal crisis closely followed by the media of both countries. The developments have once again brought the issues of sporting justice and the application of rules, which are frequently debated in the football world, to the agenda.

The origin of the incident dates back to Balogun being sent off during the Round of 16 match for stepping hard on the ankle of Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic. While a definitive one-match suspension was expected to be given to Balogun following this incident, FIFA's disciplinary bodies surprisingly canceled the automatic suspension. The suspension in question was converted into a status conditionally deferred with a one-year probation period. The Belgian team strongly reacted to the decision, stating that this situation directly affected the justice of the competition and the conditions of rivalry.

Belgian officials, located in Seattle, USA, where the match will be held, are preparing to pursue a new avenue following FIFA's final decision. Team representatives officially conveyed to U.S. Soccer that they objected to the official match roster and that they are legally opposed to the player being on the field regarding the player's situation. In addition, Belgium has the right to apply to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to demand compensation for the damages caused to them by FIFA. However, with only hours left before the critical match between the teams representing both countries, unfortunately, very little time remains for a potential decision to come from this higher court.

Officials of the Belgian Association stated that they are outraged by the situation, noting that the sporting and legal justifications behind this surprising decision made by FIFA have still not been explained to them. The RBFA management argued that they had requested the reasons for the decision and detailed information in the file since the beginning of the appeal process, but received no concrete response. Officials believe that FIFA's stance violates its own internal rules, exhibits a management far from transparency, and fails to handle the process seriously. All these uncertainties negatively affect the mental and sporting preparation processes of the teams before the match, leading to the formation of unfair competitive conditions.

On the other hand, there were also moments when the incident transcended its sporting dimension and shifted entirely to a political one. It was confirmed that US President Donald Trump directly intervened in the situation because he openly found the red card shown to Balogun to be unjust. It was learned that Trump personally called FIFA President Gianni Infantino to demand that this decision be reversed. Following this major diplomacy and public pressure, Infantino felt the need to indirectly deny claims that a high-level politician was involved in the process, stating in his announcement via social media that all of FIFA's disciplinary bodies are completely independent.
